Lubeník can be explored through several clearly distinguishable themes. Built heritage, natural surroundings, raw materials and iron processing, as well as railway history, come together here in a shared local context. The individual sites and developments lead through different periods and to different locations, without reducing the town to just one era or a single form of its history.

Culture

One specific building is the Dedinská zvonica in Lubeník. It is a masonry structure with a rectangular floor plan and a wooden upper section. The Dedinská zvonica is topped by a Baroque cupola. This building therefore allows its basic form, materials and structure to be distinguished alongside its Baroque upper finish.

Another cultural point of reference is the Železničné múzeum Lubeník. It is located at Železničná 156 in Lubeník, within the grounds of Lubeník railway station. The museum displays historical railway objects and facilities from the Middle Gemer region. The specific museum location is thus connected with a regionally focused collection relating to railway history.

Nature

The landscape of Lubeník encompasses a clearly stepped range of elevations: the municipality extends from 275 to 650 m above sea level. The Alúvium Muráňa protected area (SKUE 0285) forms a distinct natural point of reference. It crosses the cadastral area of Lubeník, including the built-up area. The elevation figure and the name of the protected area thus mark two different levels of the local area: the extent of the municipality and the route of the protected area through the cadastral area.

History

Industrial history is shaped by the development of magnesite and iron. In 1897, a magnesite deposit was discovered in Lubeník and magnesite mining began. SLOVMAG in Lubeník mines and processes magnesite; it also manufactures and sells basic refractory products. Two double-shaft furnaces built in Lubeník in 1906–1907 are part of the subsequent technical development.

Iron processing is associated with Chyžnianska Voda. In 1846, Juraj Heinzelmann bought the hammer mills and smelting works and established an ironworks near Chyžnianska Voda. At the end of the 19th century, the ironworks near Chyžnianska Voda had three blast furnaces and a foundry. Thus, the historical picture of the area brings together different raw materials, production steps and technical facilities, each with its own connection to a particular period.

Activities

The railway is also part of this network. The Gemerské spojky are unfinished railway connections dating from the Second World War. A cycling route runs along the Gemerské spojky from Chyžná voda in Lubeník to Slavošovce. The route therefore identifies a starting point in Chyžná voda, Lubeník as another named place and Slavošovce as the destination, while the Gemerské spojky retain their historical background.
