Mokrá Lúka: Baroque Churches and Nature in the Muránska Valley
Mokrá Lúka lies in the Muránska Valley below Mount Kohút. In the southeastern part of the Slovak Ore Mountains, the village stretches across a floodplain and a terrace area at the confluence of a stream flowing through the village and the Muráň River. This clearly connects the valley, mountain, river and different types of terrain within the village setting.
Nature
Protected plant species in the surrounding forests include the Turk's cap lily, the broad-leaved marsh orchid, the broad-leaved helleborine, the bird's-nest orchid and mezereon. The forest landscape thus preserves a number of notable plant habitats.
Hvarná voda is a mountain spring in the forest above the mill. It is used as pleasant-tasting drinking water and visited via worn paths in both summer and winter. At the railway station, the streams mentioned above converge and flow into the Muráň River.
Culture
The Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary dates from the first quarter of the 18th century and was originally baroque. It is in good condition and continues to be used for religious purposes. Its rich baroque furnishings include a coffered ceiling with ornaments and flowers, an organ, an altar and a pulpit.
The Protestant toleration church was built in 1785 after Emperor Joseph II issued the Patent of Toleration. It is a national cultural monument and is located on the Gothic Route, whose historical heritage is explored by visitors. Churches built in the spirit of the Patent of Toleration had to comply with the requirements of having neither a tower nor an entrance from the main road.
The older economic and industrial history is also specifically documented: in 1557, Mokrá Lúka had two iron hammers and three smelting furnaces.
The Mokrenský bosorátsky jarmok is held annually during the pre-Christmas period, usually around St Lucy's Day. Construction of the Mokrá Lúka–Revúcka Lehota cycle path has been completed.
