Holiday apartment in Hucín: Culture and landscape in the Slovak Karst

Hucín is located in the eastern part of the Slovak Karst, on a terrace in the valley of the Muráň and Rybník streams. The local history of Hucín includes pottery as a former occupation of its inhabitants. At the same time, historic buildings, traditional customs and a varied landscape shape the different facets of the village.

Culture

In the centre of the municipality, next to the main road, stands the Reformed Church of Hucín. It dates from the first half of the 14th century. In the area of the church tower there is a late Renaissance gravestone from 1681. It bears the coats of arms of the Giczei and Bessenyey families; the building in question was listed as a protected monument in 1963.

Another historical trace leads to the former distillery of Hucín. It was converted into a municipal museum. The former distillery building, which houses the municipal community centre, contains a permanent exhibition of historic clothing from the municipality and household appliances. Thus, both the former occupation of the inhabitants and the everyday life of the municipality are central themes at this site.

The list of sights in the municipality of Hucín also includes catacombs next to the manor house. The family manor house itself currently serves as a kindergarten and cultural centre. Next to the kindergarten, that is, in its vicinity, stand two protected horse chestnut trees (Aesculus hippocastanum L.) and a protected American sycamore (Platanus occidentalis L.). The three trees are listed in the Slovak register of protected trees. Their protection is justified on cultural and educational grounds; its significance is scientific, landscape-related and aesthetic.

Landscape

The landscape of the municipality takes different forms. The western part of Hucín is forested on the floodplain. The southern part of the municipality, by contrast, is characterised by a limestone hill landscape. Together with its location on a terrace in the valley of the Muráň and Rybník streams, this creates clearly defined landscape areas within the village, without having to combine them into a single landform.

Traditions

The annual cycle in Hucín also includes established cultural reference points. Sports days are held regularly in summer. The tradition of St Nicholas celebrations has also been revived in Hucín. On 15 March, celebrations are held in connection with the Hungarian Revolution of 1848. Each of these dates represents a different aspect of local community life: summer events, a revived tradition and remembrance of a historical event.

Hucín lies on the recommended cycling route through Southern Gemer. For hiking, the Slovak Karst National Park offers a variety of opportunities in the wider surrounding region. Thus, Hucín brings together a recommended cycling connection through Southern Gemer and a wider hiking area, while the local history—with its church, manor house, catacombs, museum and former pottery—provides its own cultural points of interest.
