Holiday Apartment in Radzovce – Monosa and Archaeology

Radzovce is located in the Cerová vrchovina Protected Landscape Area, on the floodplain and terrace of the Belina stream. The landscape combines protected nature with a remarkable geological character: the area consists of Upper Tertiary sediments as well as volcanic tuffs and basalts. The protected natural features in Radzovce also include the Monická forest steppe.

Nature

The most distinctive feature is Monosa, a 584-metre-high volcanic cinder cone that is visible from the surrounding area. From there, a four-kilometre-long lava flow stretches to the northwest. Weathered rocks on the western edge of the Monosa lava flow offer views of the Monosa Valley and the settlement of Obručná. A nearby lookout tower also provides panoramic views of Mount Karanč and the municipalities of Čakanovce and Radzovce.

Culture

The archaeological site in Radzovce includes a cremation burial ground with 1,334 graves. It also contains traces of a Bronze Age settlement associated with the Piliny and Kyjatice cultures. A temporary exhibition on the archaeological site of Radzovce can be seen at the cultural history museum in Radzovce.

The built heritage includes the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Radzovce, dating from 1913. The preserved Art Nouveau manor house is a single-storey rectangular building with an octagonal corner tower. It was remodelled at the beginning of the 20th century and has largely retained its Art Nouveau appearance to this day. A second manor house in Radzovce was built in 1894 by Ferenc Vecsey. The building of the Roman Catholic school, dating from 1760, is also part of the historic townscape.

History

Obručná also bears several traces of history. The settlement was founded in 1914 by Slovak lumberjacks. A monument in Obručná commemorates the people who were killed there during a partisan battle in 1944. In Monosa, a large cremation burial ground dating from the Middle to Late Bronze Age provides evidence of Celtic activity associated with the La Tène period.

Radzovce has a railway stop and a bus stop. The Obručná leisure centre has a swimming pool and offers the opportunity to hike to Pohanský vrch. Above Obručná, a leisure centre offers opportunities for active recreation and sport. Farma Cerovo is open to the public and all visitors every day throughout the summer season.
