Šávoľ lies at the transition between the Lučenec Basin (Lučenská kotlina) and the Cerová vrchovina Mountains (Cerová vrchovina). Nature, sacred buildings and traces of a long settlement history come together here within a shared local context. Nature

The Šávoľský potok stream rises in Šávoľ. The village has oak-hornbeam forests and, in places, stands of black locust. The Kerčík Nature Reserve holds a special position: it was designated in 1983 over an area of 1.2 ha. It protects a site with a rich occurrence of the Bohemian pasque flower (Pulsatilla pratensis ssp. bohemica Skalický) in the steppe-like thermophilous plant communities of the Cerová vrchovina. The designation was made for scientific, educational and cultural education purposes.

Kerčík is situated on an isolated basalt inselberg at the northwestern edge of the Cerová vrchovina. The Veľké Dravce – Veľký Bučeň educational hiking trail presents the protected area designated in 1983 between Bulhary and Šávoľ. Outside the area boundary, a third level of protection applies within a 100 m-wide protective strip.

Culture and History

The cultural history of Šávoľ also reaches far back. The village is home to a Neolithic settlement of the Bukovohorská culture. In 1250, there was a church and a rectory in the parish of Šávoľ.

The church in Šávoľ bears the name „Kostol Zoslania Ducha Svätého“; its construction year is given as 1397. The Church of the Holy Spirit is a Baroque building that was extended in 1805. Its furnishings include a Baroque high altar with sculptures of two angels and a painting of the Descent of the Holy Spirit.

Another sacred building is the Chapel of the Seven Sorrows of the Virgin Mary in Šávoľ. It was built in 1780 and reconstructed in 2011. Thus, different periods stand side by side in Šávoľ: the Neolithic Bukovohorská culture, the ecclesiastical presence documented for 1250, the church dated to 1397 and the later Baroque alterations.

Local Impressions

At the Europe Picnic in Šávoľ, goulash soup, stuffed cabbage and haluska were prepared. The programme also included craft workshops, face painting, beadwork, horseback riding and archery. Culinary and practical elements were presented alongside various activities.
