Píla is located in the eastern part of Javorie, in a narrow valley at the foot of Javor, on a right-bank tributary of the Kriváň stream.

Nature

The Píľanský potok, also locally called “Pilňanka,” flows through Píla and joins the Kriváňsky potok. Its source lies in the cadastral area of Píla. The natural environment includes the PP Krivánsky potok natural monument: It protects about 2.65 kilometres of the upper course of the Krivánsky potok, part of its tributary Bzovský potok, as well as the riverside vegetation. The protected and endangered fern “Ostrich fern” (Matteuccia struthiopteris L., Tod.) occurs in the natural monument. The protected area covers parts of Podkriváň, Píla near Mýtna and Mýtna, and has an area of 10.23 hectares.

Landscape

The geological features in the cadastral area of Píla are also clearly defined. They include granite rocks of the Veporské Crystalline Complex and volcanic tuffs. Javor reaches a height of 821 metres and shapes the mountain landscape at whose foot Píla lies.

Trails and water

The Mýtna Reservoir lies in the vicinity of Píla and is an attractive fishing area stocked with carp, zander and pike. There are several marked routes for hiking: a marked hiking route leads from Divín to Píla railway station; a blue-marked variant leads to Javor. The hike to Javor begins in Píla, follows a yellow-marked route through the village and then continues along a blue-marked route to the summit of Javor.

Culture and history

The village’s connection with the railway is reflected in the Píliansky Tunnel. It was built in 1871 as part of the Šalgotarján–Lučenec–Zvolen railway line and is 121 metres long. The tunnel is considered an attraction for photographers and railway enthusiasts and can be easily reached from Píla railway station via the former railway track. A railway station was established in Píla in 1942. Another testimony to the village’s history is the brick bell tower: It was built after 1750 and contains a bell cast in 1811. The local tradition also includes the Maypole custom known as “stavanie a váľanie mája,” which Píla organises every year.
