Culture and History

One of the city’s notable buildings is the Lučenec Synagogue, featuring Byzantine-Oriental and Art Nouveau elements. Its interior is dominated by a monumental dome. The synagogue is a national cultural monument and part of Slovakia’s Jewish Heritage Route. Following its reconstruction, it was opened to the public as a multicultural space in May 2016; it also serves cultural and social purposes.

The town hall houses the Lučenec City Museum and is itself a national cultural monument. The permanent exhibitions cover the history of the city, the life of the bourgeoisie, the production of factories and artisans, the school of earlier generations and living conditions in the first half of the 20th century. This insight is complemented by works by the painter František Gyurkovits.

Since 1985, the Novohrad Museum and Gallery has been located in the listed building of the former county courthouse in the historic centre of Lučenec. The institution manages more than 25,000 archaeological, ethnological, historical and gallery collection items. These include folk ceramics, enamelware and historic glass; the Novohrad Museum is particularly presented through its focus on folk ceramics and glass.

The Július Szabó Memorial House is also part of the city’s cultural character. It was established in 2008 in the villa in Lučenec Park where the artist lived. Works by Július Szabó dating up to the 1960s are displayed there; they address various themes and were created using different techniques. The historic building was ceremonially opened to the public on 9 December 1993 and has served as a congress centre since 1994.

In the historic centre, on the northern side of Kubínyiho Square, stands the Neo-Gothic Calvinist, or Reformed, Church of Lučenec. Its 64-metre-high tower was completed in 1896. The Reformed Christian Church in Slovakia, Lučenec congregation, took over the building’s administration again in 2005; services are held there.

Parks, Water and Trails

Lučenec City Park covers 17 hectares and is designed in three garden styles. A hiking trail and two cycling routes run through the park, connecting it with the surrounding region. One route leads from the city park via Lučenec–Ľadovo Park and other locations to Ipolytarnóc.

The Ľadovo Reservoir is located on the Tuhárský potok in the cadastral area of the city of Lučenec and covers 26.2 hectares. In summer, it is used for recreation and sport fishing. The Lučenec Forest Park offers visitors two recreational zones and two cycling routes with a combined length of 10.15 kilometres. One of these cycling routes includes a 360-metre-long educational trail with three stations and information boards.

The Lučenec City Forest Park has Nordic walking routes measuring 1.0 and 3.0 kilometres in length. People of all age groups can try these routes.
