Holiday Apartment in Mašková: Landscape, Church and Culture

Archaeological excavations in Mašková uncovered a settlement of the Piliny culture and an extensive Bronze Age find.

Geographical Location

Mašková lies on the western edge of the Lučenská kotlina in a valley of the Mašková stream. The cadastral area includes various elevations and landscape forms, which differ particularly between its western and eastern parts.

Nature

The cadastral area of Mašková lies at an altitude of 186 to 389 metres above sea level. The higher western part consists predominantly of rhyodacitic and andesitic tuffs and is mainly covered by oak and hornbeam forests. In the eastern part, there is hilly terrain on Young Tertiary deposits with islands of basalt and basalt tuff.

The area of Mašková is designated as a breeding site for the red-backed shrike. The different geological substrates and forest areas are therefore just as much a part of the local landscape as the settlement in the valley of the Mašková stream.

Culture and History

Many experts consider the church in Mašková to be one of the oldest churches in Novohrad. The medieval church was expanded in 1793–94 by additions on the northern and southern sides to form a cruciform layout. Its tower was destroyed by artillery fire from German troops on 17 January 1945.

The museum in Mašková is located in the municipal office complex in a former prayer house that later served as a kindergarten. One of the three memorial rooms recreates the furnishings of historic houses. One of the three memorial rooms commemorates personalities who were active in the municipality, including Daniel Maróthy, Koloman Banšel, Ján Maróthy, Martin Maróthy, Július Janko and Július Kokavec.

Events

The Maškovská hostina takes place regularly in September and commemorates the anniversary of the consecration of the church. Fašiangy is regularly held in Mašková as a children's carnival. Regular cultural events also include a liberation bonfire in May.

On 7 May 2025, a liberation bonfire was lit in Mašková to commemorate the 80th anniversary of liberation from fascism. The Maškovský ples took place on 7 February 2026, with dancing to music by the Novohrad Band.

Mašková is easily accessible by public buses and has two bus stops, one of which is located in the village centre. The Mašková municipal library is located in the cultural centre. It is open on Tuesdays from 15:00 to 17:00, has more than 200 books, mainly fiction and non-fiction, as well as a reading room. Mašková also has a grocery store and a restaurant.
