Bulhary lies in the northern part of the Cerová vrchovina, in the spring area of a left-bank tributary of the Suchá stream. The landscape includes Veľký Bučeň: the table mountain is 514 m high and forms the highest slope in the northern part of the mountain range. Its location and the geological formations of the surrounding area give the place a distinct landscape setting.

The landscape

The Bulhary area consists of sandstone and claystone, from which remnants of basaltic lava flows emerge. It is covered with beech, oak and black locust forests. In the vicinity of Bulhary, the Kerčík Nature Reserve lies between Bulhary and Šávoľ on an isolated basalt spur. The reserve protects steppe-like, thermophilous plant communities of the Cerová vrchovina, with an abundant occurrence of the Bohemian pasque flower (Pulsatilla pratensis ssp. bohemica Skalický).

West of Bulhary, on the northwestern edge of the Cerová vrchovina, lies the Kameňolom Bulhary quarry. The active quarry was established in 1870; basalt and crushed stone are extracted there. Green olivine, aragonite, opal and zeolites occur in cavities in the basalt.

Trails

Veľký Bučeň can be reached via various routes. A 9 km-long paved road to the table mountain is also a red-marked cycling route that begins at Fiľakovo main railway station. A yellow-marked hiking trail of approximately 9.5 km along the Fiľakovské skaly offers another route to Veľký Bučeň and passes through hills formed by Neogene basaltic volcanism. There is a hunting stand and an information board at the summit.

History and culture

The Cesta Márie Széchy is a 65 km-long historic route associated with the 17th century. It connects Fiľakovský hrad with Muránsky hrad. Historical landmarks can also be found in Bulhary itself: Kaplnka Všetkých svätých is a Classicist chapel built in 1849. It was restored in 1893; inside is a folk-crafted late Baroque altar dating from around 1800.

The former “Kráľ stromov” in Bulhary is also connected with the local history: an 800-year-old oak tree. A cross-section of this former tree is located in the town museum of Fiľakovo.
