Čakanovce lies in the western part of the Cerová vrchovina, in the valley of a tributary of the Belina. A distinctive feature of the landscape is the Čakanovský profil natural monument: it has been protected since 1990 and covers 0.69 hectares.

Nature and geology

The landscape within the municipality is largely deforested and ranges from hilly terrain to mountain country. Stands of oak and black locust have been preserved. Young Tertiary tuffaceous sandstones, dissected by erosion gullies, form the geological bedrock; in places, eroded remnants of basalt and andesite are exposed.

The Čakanovský profil reveals a varied geological history: visible here are sediments of a retreating Early Miocene sea, followed by terrestrial lake and river sediments. In the upper part of the profile there is a lignite seam formed in a swamp environment. Significant paleontological finds, including marine shells, are also associated with the Čakanovský profil.

Exploring the area

The Čakanovský profil includes a 1.3 km educational trail. From Čakanovce, the natural monument can be reached via a dirt track. The first sections – the lower sand pit, the road cut and the gravel pit – are well exposed. By contrast, the area around the Iboľa adit at the Čakanovský profil is heavily overgrown and difficult to access.

History and architectural heritage

Čakanovce is home to the Roman Catholic Baroque Church of Saint Elizabeth, dating from 1778. There is also a Neoclassical wayside chapel from the early 19th century. The settlement has been documented in writing since 1439 under the name Chakanbaza.

The history of Čakanovce includes several significant turning points. From 1554 to 1594, Čakanovce was occupied by the Turks and incorporated into the Sanjak of Sečany. During the wars of the 17th century, Čakanovce fell into decline and was restored as a noble settlement at the beginning of the 18th century. An archaeological site with a bronze hoard is recorded in the municipality’s outer area.
