Holiday apartment in Belina: Belinské skaly and local history
Nature
Belina draws attention to the Belinské skaly, a 7.11-hectare nature monument in Belina that was protected in 1993. At the western edge of a lava flow, the rock formation creates a rock-city relief at an early stage of development. This produces a landscape whose forms emerge directly from the basalt: weathering creates rock towers, rock windows and distinctive slab-like separation formations.
This natural area also includes views from high rocks. The small pseudokarst caves near the Belinské skaly indicate settlement as early as the Neolithic period. Thus, striking geological formations and early traces of human presence are connected at this site. The educational trail is also part of the Belinské skaly.
Landscape
Belina is located in the Cerová vrchovina, on the floodplain and terrace of the Belina stream. The Cerová vrchovina Protected Landscape Area also extends partly across the municipality's territory. The vegetation in Belina includes thermophilous oak forests, including Turkey oak stands, as well as black locust stands. The landscape is therefore shaped both by its geological bedrock and by different types of forest.
Culture and history
A prominent building in the village is the Church of the Ascension of the Lord in Belina. It is a Roman Catholic church in the Secession style, dates from 1896 and was built on older foundations. In addition to architecture, language is also part of the local culture: Belina lies in the Palóc dialect area. This is reflected, among other things, in words used in everyday life such as “kutács”, “réttya” and “bornyú”.
The founding of Belina is dated to 1371. The historical owners of the Belina area included the Ratold, Derecsényi and Lórántffy families. The village's working history has also been passed down: in the 19th century, residents of Belina worked in basalt quarries.
Further evidence of the early past is provided by the remains found during excavations in Monosa. They indicate that the area of Belina was already settled in prehistoric times. Together with the reference to Neolithic settlement near the Belinské skaly, the documented history therefore extends far beyond the dated founding.
