Fiľakovo makes a striking first impression with a medieval stone castle in the centre of the town: Fiľakovo Castle was built on volcanic tuff and is first mentioned in the mid-13th century. On the castle grounds, a 505-metre-long educational trail with five information panels provides insights into the history of the castle, natural conditions, vegetation, the geological structure of the castle hill and the surrounding landscape. Pedestrian access is via Podhradská Street, while vehicles can enter via Baštová Street.
History
Since 1994, the Fiľakovo Town Museum has been housed in the local Reduta building, the Vigadó. Its permanent exhibition traces the town’s history from the destruction of the castle in 1682, or from the resettlement of the small town, through to the 1960s. A separate room in the exhibition is dedicated to the traditions of the local enamel factory and local industrial enterprises. Thus, in addition to the medieval complex, later developments in the town are also a focus.
Culture
The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Fiľakovo was rebuilt as a single-nave church between 1694 and 1727 after its predecessor was destroyed by the Turks in 1544. The Franciscan monastery also dates from this period: the building, erected between 1699 and 1727, has two storeys, three wings and a central courtyard. On its north-west side, it adjoins the church. For centuries, the Franciscans shaped the spiritual life of Fiľakovo and remain closely connected with the town to this day.
Nature
Fiľakovo lies on the edge of the Cerová vrchovina Protected Landscape Area. The area offers opportunities to explore nature and go hiking. The castle hill of Fiľakovo forms a distinct part of this protected landscape area. The town park is a natural setting in its own right: rare, protected trees grow there, while the park also offers visitors a place to relax and houses a renovated zoo.
