Discover Stožok: Cycle paths, nature and culture

Stožok is considered a starting point for marked hiking and cycle paths towards Javorie and Poľana. A circular cycle route starting at Masarykov dvor in Vígľaš-Pstruša runs through the village.

Cycle paths and getting there

The Zvonička stands along the Hontianska cycle route. The section of the cycle route from Masarykov dvor to Stožok runs along a paved cycle path that is also suitable for less experienced cyclists. Stožok can be reached by train, car or bus.

Local history and culture

The Church of the Holy Family in Stožok was built in 2002 and is considered a cultural landmark by the municipality. The Zvonička was built in 1863 and renovated in 1993.

South of Stožok, approximately 250 metres beyond the settlement of Plžíkovci, there is a memorial to the victims of the Second World War. In August, a procession with a Holy Mass takes place in Stožok.

Nature and protected areas

The Pstruša Nature Reserve lies in the cadastral area of the municipality of Stožok in the Detva District. Covering 7.36 hectares, it protects wet meadow plant communities with a mass occurrence of the endangered and protected snake's-head fritillary (Fritillaria meleagris). At the end of April, the Pstruša Nature Reserve can appear red with thousands of blooming snake's-head fritillaries.

The Poľana Special Protection Area extends across almost the entire municipal territory of Stožok. Significant numbers of protected endangered bird species occur there, including the woodchat shrike, quail, wryneck and middle spotted woodpecker. In the vicinity of Stožok, the rocks below Chochuľka offer a south-facing viewpoint overlooking Stožok, the Zvolenská kotlina, Javorie and Ostrôžky.

The Rohy Nature Reserve protects the xerothermic vegetation of the Zvolenská kotlina in Stožok; it was designated in 1986 and is designated as an area without intervention. The paths above the Rohy Nature Reserve are used by recreational athletes and hikers. The Rohy Nature Reserve is not open to the public for nature conservation reasons.

Activities and leisure

The Stožok sports and recreation complex offers a football pitch, a multi-purpose court, a beach court, bowling, a rope course and a climbing wall, as well as a shelter with a fire pit available for rent.

The Farmársky park in Stožok is open to the public and enables families to interact with domestic animals. At Farmársky park, visitors can feed, groom and observe horses, goats, geese, ducks, chickens, dogs and cats. Farmársky park also offers interactive and educational quiz events about wildlife and environmental protection.

Children from Stožok and the neighbouring villages walk through a forest where they encounter characters from various fairy tales.
