Horný Tisovník – Holiday apartment amid folk art in Novohrad

Horný Tisovník combines a distinctive landscape with an exceptionally prominent culture of folk remembrance. Traditional swing wells are among the village’s attractions, while the cemetery, churches and bell towers provide insights into the region’s architectural and craft history. Horný Tisovník is also mentioned as a starting point for a longer hike through Javorie.

Culture

Folk stonecutting became established in Horný Tisovník. The significance of this tradition was recognized with a special award in 2017: the rediscovery and restoration of folk tombstones, as well as the preservation of the spiritual heritage of the past, were honored. A memorial room in Horný Tisovník is dedicated to the folk tombstones of Novohrad.

Old Cemetery

More than 80 stone tombstones have been preserved in the restored old cemetery. An information board introduces Michal Miloslav Laciak (1826–1904), who is buried here. The tombstones of Horný and Dolný Tisovník feature plant ornaments, various star and sun motifs, as well as depictions of birds, insects and human figures.

The stone and wooden folk tombstones of the Evangelical Christians of the Augsburg Confession from Horný and Dolný Tisovník were created between 1870 and 1930. They are considered the most representative and cohesive expression of the folk art of Novohrad. The presentation at the old cemetery includes information boards, explanatory texts in carved boxes, a central area with a main information board and benches. The site is located in a natural setting on a slope above Horný Tisovník, near the Evangelical church and a bell tower.

Churches and Bell Towers

The Evangelical church of Horný Tisovník stands on the site of a wooden Evangelical prayer house dating from 1791 and was built in 1867. Another historic religious site is the Church of Saints Philip and James. It was originally Gothic, completely rebuilt during the Renaissance and remodeled in the Baroque style between 1751 and 1755. The church stands in the northeastern part of the village, is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose.

The architectural surroundings include a masonry bell tower with a square ground plan, rectangular sound openings, smooth façades and a tent-shaped roof. This bell tower stands on a slope in the central part of the village. In the open terrain above the lower part, there is also a wooden bell tower next to the masonry one.

In Dolný Tisovník, the wooden bell tower has the characteristic form of the open, arcade-like Renaissance bell towers of the 17th century. Together with the churches and the old cemetery, these structures form varied evidence of the local religious and folk art.

Landscape

Horný Tisovník lies in the northwest of Novohrad, southeast of the Javorie Mountains, in the eastern part of the Krupinská vrchovina highlands and in the valley of the Tisovník River. The municipal territory consists of andesitic tuffs and lava flows and contains mineral springs. Historical landscape structures with an agricultural and pastoral character have been preserved in Horný Tisovník and its surroundings. Most of the area of Horný Tisovník is covered by forest stands.

Hiking

The two-day, 40-kilometer hike “Through the Settlements of Javorie from Horný Tisovník to Zvolen” leads from Horný Tisovník via several settlements and waypoints to Zvolen. A bus connection to Horný Tisovník is indicated for this hike. Thus, in addition to the cultural sites associated with the village, the location is connected with a clearly identified longer route passing through several stops and landscape areas.
