Látky: Holiday apartment between uplands, ski area and nature

Látky is situated on an upland plateau of the Slovak Ore Mountains. Here, winter sports, cycle paths, protected landscapes and evidence of rural culture come together. The specific features of the area include the Habáňovo Nature Reserve, the Látky–Kočanda winter sports area, historic chapels and preserved examples of folk culture.

Landscape and nature

Northeast of Látky lies the Habáňovo Nature Reserve, near the Mláky recreation area. The reserve protects peat meadows and hillside springs and is part of the Natura 2000 network. Habáňovo is therefore a clearly defined natural area within the upland landscape. Its proximity to Mláky also connects this protected area with another locally named recreation area.

Winter and outdoor activities

The Látky–Kočanda ski area has two tow lifts, each approximately 500 metres long. It is directly accessible from the II/526 main road; the access point is 10 to 50 metres from the road. A free car park with approximately 100 spaces is available for vehicles. Around 10 kilometres of cross-country ski trails are also available in the Látky–Mláky area. They are located five minutes from the village and are also suitable for beginners. The winter sports offering is complemented by a ski slope for summer skiing on grass skis in Látky.

Cycle paths

The green cycle route “Okruh okolo Poľany” passes through Látky between Detvianska Huta and Lom nad Rimavicou. A second marked connection is the yellow cycle route “Prameň Ipľa”. Its route leads via Prameň Ipľa, Vrch Ipľa, Bány, Mlakárske, Do Bánov, the Prašivá saddle, Mláky, Vrchy and Vrch Jazero. Both routes identify Látky as part of a larger network of paths through the landscape.

Culture and local life

The village landscape includes Látky’s brick bell tower, dating from 1804. Its bells date from 1806 and 1903. Mláky is also home to two chapels from different periods: the Chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary dates from 1930, while the Chapel of Saint Anthony of Padua dates from 1856. Examples of folk culture have also been preserved in Látky’s dispersed settlements.

Regional products and farm-based offerings are also specifically represented. The RD Látky tourist accommodation offers farm-gate sales of organic dairy products made from cow’s and sheep’s milk, including cheese, bryndza and žinčica. At Ranč pod Bukmi in Látky, visitors can go horseback riding.

Getting there

Látky is served by SAD bus connections on the Zvolen–Detva–Látky–Kokava nad Rimavicou route. This provides a specific public transport connection via several places in the surrounding area.
