Hriňová: Waterfall, Educational Trail and Culture

The Bystrý potok waterfall is a national natural monument and is located in the cadastral territory of the town of Hriňová. Its drop is 20 metres high.

Nature

The educational trail to the Bystrô waterfall is 3.5 km long and equipped with nine information panels. An educational trail from Hriňová to the Bystrý potok waterfall leads via Bystré and Vrátka through the valley along the Bystrý potok to the waterfall; it is suitable for families with children. From the panoramic viewpoints in Hriňová, the Hriňovské lazy, surrounding valleys, fields and mountains can be seen. In 2015, an expansion of the transition zone of the Poľana Biosphere Reserve to include the so-called Hriňovské lazy was proposed. For planning your day, you can give different weight to nature, trails and cultural themes. Different distance details, a described route, historical sites and local traditions can be considered alongside one another without any single focus being required. The order of your discoveries remains open. The natural and cultural points mentioned create different accents in Hriňová: Bystrý potok, Bystrô, Bystré and Vrátka represent trails and landscape, while the Calvary, church, Drevenica and wooden crosses reveal historical and traditional connections. The August programme adds an annual recurring event to these local references.

Culture

The Calvary in Hriňová comprises fourteen stations; the twelfth station consists of three crosses above the town centre. The Hriňovská drevenica Štefana Nosáľa is a historic building with an exhibition that was intended to be dedicated to the history, traditions and present-day life of the town. An exhibition in the Hriňovská drevenica Štefana Nosáľa focuses mainly on Professor Štefan Nosáľ (1927–2017), who was born in Hriňová and was the artistic director of the Lúčnica ensemble.

The Church of St Peter and Paul was consecrated and thus completed on 8 September 1947 by Bishop Dr Andrej Škrábik. Wooden crosses, found mainly near crossroads in Hriňová, testify to the skill of local woodcarvers. They are predominantly made of oak and richly decorated with ornamental, sacred, Old Slavic, plant and figurative motifs.

In Hriňová's annual cultural programme, August includes the event Gazdovanie na Hriňovských lazoch.
