Holiday apartment in Podkriváň – nature, culture and the Novohradská cyklomagistrála

Podkriváň is gaining attention as a stop on the 117-kilometre Novohradská cyklomagistrála, Route 013. The route runs through Detva, Podkriváň, Divín and Lučenec. The village therefore combines a clearly defined cycling connection with a geographical location and numerous examples of sacred and artisanal history.

Geographical setting

Podkriváň lies in Pohroní Poľany in the Zvolen Basin. The village is located on the route connecting Lučenec and Zvolen and on the boundary between the Slovak Ore Mountains and Javorie. This location identifies the basin, the two neighbouring landscape areas and the connection between the two cities.

Nature

The natural area includes the Krivánsky potok natural monument. It protects the upper course of the Krivánsky potok over a length of approximately 2.65 km, together with its riparian vegetation. The approximate length describes the protected section without reducing it to an exactly defined figure.

The protected and endangered ostrich fern (Perovník Pštrosí), marsh forget-me-not and glandular toothwort are found in the natural monument. Thus, in addition to the stream and its riparian vegetation, three specifically named plants are also central to this natural area.

Culture and history

Podkriváň is home to the Roman Catholic Classicist Church of Saint Martin, Bishop and Confessor; it was built in Podkriváň in 1803. The Chapel of Saint Anthony of Padua dates from 1856. Both buildings are sacred landmarks of the village, distinguished by their different years of construction.

Podkriváň is also home to the grave of Anton Emanuel Timko, with a tombstone. Another historical connection lies in local glassmaking: a new glassworks was built in Podkriváň in 1849–1850, producing greenish hollow glass and sheet glass.

The artisanal heritage also extends beyond a single site. In the municipality of Podkriváň there is a watermill building that belonged to Štefan Francisci in 1930 and was powered by an overshot water wheel. There are several log houses in the Laz settlements. Horná Bzová is home to a filial chapel of Our Lady of Perpetual Help dating from 1910.
