Culture, Sounds and History

The fujara is closely associated with Detva’s traditional folk culture and was added to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List in 2005. The Folklórne slávnosti pod Poľanou also build on this tradition: Detva has hosted the folklore festival since 1966, and it takes place every year on the second weekend of July. The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Francis of Assisi, built between 1803 and 1805 and preserved as a protected cultural monument, adds a historical accent. In the historic Vagač House, Slovakia’s first bryndza cheese dairy was founded in the 19th century.

The Podpolianske Museum

In the historic part of Detva, the Podpolianske Museum is housed in a former municipal office building. One of its cultural highlights is the exhibition Instrumentum Excellens FSP Detva on folk musical instruments. It displays 118 instruments by 47 makers from Slovakia. The permanent exhibition on Slovak folk musical instruments uses educational and interactive elements. Another permanent exhibition, Ovce moje, ovce..., presents the Vlach culture of the Podpoľanie region. The museum offers year-round educational cultural activities for visitors of all ages and organizes creative art workshops with a regional focus.

Rocks and Marked Trails

The natural monument of Melichova skala is located near Detva, consisting of a column-shaped rock above the settlement of Skliarovo. It is the preserved remnant of the front of a lava flow and displays formations created by flowing lava; a blue-marked hiking trail leads around the rock. Kalamárka is also located near Detva, north of the town. The natural monument is visited by tourists and serves as an educational and professional illustrative site. The red-marked Rudná magistrála hiking trail and the Kalamárka educational trail lead from Detva to the Kalamárka natural monument.
