Săcălaz: History, Bega Riverbank and Cycling Route

Săcălaz is documented in a charter dated 29 December 1392. The Săcălaz Archaeological Area – Obiectiv 8 includes settlement remains of the Eneolithic Tiszapolgar culture. Further settlement remains in the area date from the post-Roman period. Thus, Săcălaz brings together both a medieval documentary reference and archaeological evidence of significantly earlier and later settlement phases. The name of the area connects these finds with present-day Săcălaz.

History and Churches

A colonisation order issued in 1765 ordered the relocation of the Romanian population from Săcălaz to the southern part of Torontal. The order was intended to make room for Swabian settlers. During this period, Săcălaz was redesigned according to a typical Austrian plan. The Catholic church was located in the centre. Săcălaz is home to the Catholic church dating from 1772. On 7 April 2026, the wooden church of the Orthodox community in Săcălaz burned down. The local history therefore encompasses both the reorganisation of the settlement and the religious buildings connected with this development. The colonisation order explicitly refers to the relocation from Săcălaz to the southern part of Torontal and the planned settlement of Swabian settlers. The Austrian plan and the central location of the Catholic church are part of the design of this period.

Bega Riverbank and Agriculture

The settlement was later relocated to the bank of the Bega. The land along the Bega was swampy. Pastures and tall reeds surrounded the settlement site. Historically, grain cultivation was the main occupation of the inhabitants of Săcălaz. Wheat and maize were cultivated in particular. The first grain mill in Săcălaz was built in 1725. The Bega riverbank and agriculture describe two closely connected aspects of the place: the settlement site, with its water-shaped landscape, and work in the fields. The mill from 1725 completes the picture of the historical handling of grain.

Cycling Paths and Route

On 1 July 2026, the municipality of Săcălaz completed the project “Development of environmentally friendly transport infrastructure – cycling paths in the municipality of Săcălaz, Timiș County”. The completed project includes infrastructure for bicycles and non-motorised means of transport. An almost 30-kilometre cycling route leads from Timișoara via Sânmihaiu Român and Săcălaz back to Timișoara. The route is designed as a circular connection: Timișoara is the starting and return point, while Sânmihaiu Român and Săcălaz lie along the route. In addition to the cycling paths, the completed municipal project includes facilities for non-motorised means of transport. The almost 30 kilometres give the described connection a clearly defined scope.

Local Festivals

The local event “Zilele Săcălazului” is scheduled for the first Sunday in October. The Wine and Pie Festival is scheduled for the last Saturday before the beginning of the Easter fasting period. Both dates are tied to fixed periods of the year. “Zilele Săcălazului” appears in the events calendar on the first Sunday in October, while the Wine and Pie Festival is tied to the last Saturday before the start of the Easter fasting period. The two events have different names and follow different time references.
