The Muzeul Apei is located on the grounds of the former Urseni waterworks, which operated from 1914 to 1991 and was Timişoara's first drinking water treatment plant. The visitor route leads through three industrial heritage buildings from this former waterworks. The museum visit therefore combines the history of drinking water supply with the preserved buildings of a former technical facility.
Culture and history
Castelul Huniade was built over the ruins of Timişoara's medieval castle. Between 1315 and 1323, it served as a royal residence and thus preserves several historical periods in one place. At the Muzeul Satului Bănățean, the permanent interactive exhibition “O zi din viața satului – Banatul în comunism” is part of the regular exhibition offering. It depicts everyday life in a Banat village during the communist era.
The temporary exhibitions of the Muzeul Național al Banatului are currently being shown at Bastionul Theresia, at 4 Martin-Luther Street, while restoration work is under way. This exhibition venue is therefore the relevant location for museum visits for as long as the restoration work continues. The historic site Casa Contelui Mercy Timişoara is also located in the immediate vicinity of Timişoara. The Fântâna cu Peşti Timişoara, the Statuia Lupoaicei Timişoara and the Monumentul Sfântului Ioan Nepomuk Timişoara are also located nearby; all three are classified as monuments.
Nature and activities
Fântâna lui Goga is a spring in the vicinity of Timişoara. Dealul Flămând is a hill in the same area. Moşniţa is also a hill in the vicinity of Timişoara. La Canton is located in the wider regional surroundings of the city and is classified there as a hill. The different geographical references thus range from the immediate vicinity to the wider regional surroundings.
Regina-Maria Park was opened to the public as an English-style park in 1862. A cycle tour along the banks of the Bega can follow a 37 km-long cycle path to the border with Serbia. Together with the public park and the named landscape features, this places a historic park as well as springs and hills in the surroundings of Timişoara at the centre of attention.
City centre
The city tour is a walking tour of the most important sights in the centre of Timişoara and conveys the history of the city. Notable Baroque buildings on the square include the Roman Catholic Cathedral and the Baroque Palace. One building currently houses the National Theatre, the Romanian Opera, the German Theatre and the Hungarian Theatre. The tour thus combines central sights, Baroque architecture and several stages under one urban cultural theme.
