Discover Cărpiniș: Banat Houses, Churches and Bodies of Water

Cărpiniș has been documented in records since at least 1387. The geometric settlement plan of the locality has the shape of a checkerboard village; in German specialist literature, this is referred to as a “Schachbettdorf”. Between 1776 and 1778, 56 Swabian families were settled here.

Culture

The traditional Swabian houses in Cărpiniș belong to the German house type of the Banat. Their short side faces the street, while the buildings extend deep into the plot. The gabled façades of the German houses are decorated with motifs such as the sun, rosette, diamond, triangle, tree of life, laurel and flowers.

The house form combines a narrow street frontage with a deep plot structure. As a result, the gabled façades differ not only in their decorations but also in the distinctive positioning of the houses within the townscape.

The Roman Catholic church in Cărpiniș dates from 1862 and is dedicated to the martyr Saint Maximilian. The Romanian Orthodox church in the locality dates from 2004. The patron saints of the Greek Catholic church are the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel.

The three churches mentioned thus represent different ecclesiastical traditions in the locality. At the same time, their patronages indicate different affiliations: the Catholic church is associated with Saint Maximilian, while the Greek Catholic church venerates the Archangels Michael and Gabriel.

Two groups of Romanian folk dancers rehearse at the Cărpiniș cultural centre. The Ruga and the church patronal feast take place on 26 October, the feast day of Saint Dumitru. Cărpiniș Community Day is celebrated on the first Sunday in September.

The local events are therefore spread across two fixed dates in the annual calendar: the first Sunday in September and 26 October. The later date combines the Ruga with the church patronal feast and the feast of Saint Dumitru.

History

A reinforced-concrete monument was erected in 1992 next to the monument to the First World War. Its plaque commemorates those who died in the Second World War, as well as the people deported to Russia between 1945 and 1951 and to the Bărăgan between 1952 and 1956.

Landscape

Cărpiniș lies in natural valleys that belong to an ancient marshland. Over time, this area was drained and dried out. There are five natural bodies of water within the built-up area.

To the north and east of the locality, there are also two larger bodies of water created by earlier excavations. The landscape of Cărpiniș thus includes natural valleys, remaining bodies of water and larger artificially created bodies of water.

The bodies of water have different origins and are located in different parts of the locality. The five natural bodies of water are situated within the built-up area, while the two larger bodies created by excavations lie to the north and east.

Transport connections

CFR Cărpiniș railway station is a railway junction. It connects Cărpiniș with Timișoara, Jimbolia, Cenei and other places in the county and the country.

Surroundings

The surroundings of Cărpiniș are home to the Biserica Romano-Catolică Biled and the Biserica Ortodoxă Biled, both of which are churches.

The wider regional surroundings of Cărpiniș include Casa Contelui Mercy Timişoara, a historic site, and the Biserica Romano-Catolică Sfântul Vedelin, a church.

Also located in the wider regional surroundings are La Gomila and Dealul Botianului, two hills, as well as Fântâna lui Goga, a spring. La Canton is another hill located there.
