Culture and History

Giroc is home to the Orthodox Church of “Sfântul Dimitrie”, which was built in 1759. The church is a single-nave hall church in a simplified Baroque style. The church’s iconostasis was created in 1763 and restored in 1922.

The construction history of the church therefore dates back to the 18th century, while the iconostasis makes two further historical points in time visible through its creation in 1763 and restoration in 1922. Thus, architecture and furnishings, each with their own date, come together in the same church.

The monument to the heroes of Giroc who fell in the First World War was erected in 1927. As a tribute, it commemorates 82 young men from the village. The Aurel Vlaicu monument was erected in 1914, shortly after the fatal accident of aviation pioneer Aurel Vlaicu.

The two monuments point to different forms of remembrance: one keeps alive the memory of young men from Giroc, while the other is associated with the fatal accident of aviation pioneer Aurel Vlaicu. Their years of erection, 1927 and 1914, therefore belong to different historical contexts.

Festivals and Cultural Events

Ruga Giroc takes place on the first and second days of Easter. These two Easter days give the festival a clearly defined period. The “În glas de toacă” Festival of Culture and Spirituality reached its twelfth edition in 2019. It took place in the courtyard of the Orthodox Church of “Sfântul Dimitrie” in Giroc.

Ruga is spread over the first and second days of Easter and is thereby linked to two fixed public holidays. At the “În glas de toacă” festival, the twelfth edition also marks a continuing history of the event, while the churchyard is the explicitly named venue.

The third edition of the Festivalul Recoltei in Giroc featured music and dance at the cultural center. The program also included Romanian traditions. Children’s activities were likewise part of this edition.
