Zolt: Wooden Church, Forested Slope and Valley Views
Accommodation in Zolt
Zolt combines architectural history with a landscape that unfolds from the hilltop wooden church and the forested slope. The Church of “Sfinţii Apostoli Petru şi Pavel” stands above the village; from there, you can see the entire valley. There is also a particular sight to look for inside: the vaulted ceilings and walls are completely painted. The paintings were created in 1781 by Teodor Zugravul and Atanasie of Lugoj.

Wooden Church and Historic Architecture
The wooden church dates from the 18th century and is dedicated to the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul. Its history extends beyond Zolt: it was one of seven historic wooden churches in the Făget area included in a restoration and preservation programme initiated by the Ministry of Culture. In the municipality of Fârdea, the church is one of the tourist attractions. This place brings together a clear religious dedication, painted interior decoration and the legacy of a regional preservation programme.
The Gospodăria de la Zolt offers a different perspective on the architecture. It comprises a pantry facing the street above a pigsty, an open shed and a spacious stable facing the garden. The outbuildings are grouped under a shared roof with a double layer of shingles. This specific layout is what makes the ensemble interesting: different functional spaces are housed together, while their orientation towards the street and the garden remains clear.
Forested Slope, Sports and Excursions
The Zolt tourist complex is situated on a slope bordered by beech, oak and birch forest, at an altitude of around 400 metres. Its facilities include a fishing pond, an outdoor swimming pool that is particularly popular in summer, and football and tennis courts. Alongside the architectural history, it offers a distinct focus on water and sports activities. If you give leisure facilities greater priority than church art, the tourist complex will take centre stage in your travel plans.
For views beyond Zolt, a route marked with a blue cross leads through beech forests and, in places, coniferous forests to the summit of Padeș, in the wider surrounding region. It is therefore a separate point of interest for hiking plans in the region, not simply an extension of a walk around the village. A visitor programme that was described also included invitations after the meal to go hiking along the Valea Mare and take a cycling tour. These activities were part of that programme and do not describe regularly available offerings.
The renovated Zolt Training Center now operates under the name “Centru de Formare Zolt” and is used for professional workshops. If you are interested in taking part, it is advisable to check the options in advance. A travel recommendation from September 2025 also described a tourist route: it ran from Luncanii de Sus through Zolt, Gladna, Fârdea, Surduc and Traian Vuia, returning to the A1. Another described tourist route included a stop at Zolt’s historic wooden church.
Local Produce and Choosing Where to Stay
The local food scene includes potter Mihai Iamandi, who offers a variety of regional culinary products in Zolt. This personal connection complements the excursion and cultural themes, but does not mean that he runs a regular shop.
When looking for a holiday apartment in Zolt, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your stay. For architectural history, the church with its 1781 paintings and the Gospodăria offer different perspectives; the tourist complex brings together a pond, an outdoor swimming pool and sports courts. The route to Padeș is in the wider surrounding region, while the hike along the Valea Mare and the cycling tour were part of a described visitor programme. If workshops or these programme activities are important to your plans, ask about participation options in advance.
