Discover Pipirig: Museum, Wooden Church and European Bison

Pipirig lies in the Pipirig Depression in the upper reaches of the Neamț (Ozana) River, east of the Stânișoara Mountains. To the west-northwest, the depression is dominated by the 1,530-metre-high Bivolu Peak. Forests cover 69% of the area of Pipirig Commune. Vânători-Neamț Nature Park encompasses all or part of the administrative territory of Pipirig.

Culture

The “David Creangă” Ethnographic Museum in Pipirig was founded on 7 June 2003 and moved to its new location in the administrative centre of Pipirig Commune in summer 2016. It is housed in a beam-built house typical of the region, with a shingle roof. The building includes a veranda, an entrance room and two rooms.

The museum preserves objects that are over 100 years old and were collected from the area of Pipirig Commune. The collection showcases traditional clothing from the region, including Bundițe, Ii, Catrințe, Opinci, Ițari, Chimir and Brâu.

In the village of Dolhești stands Brânzăria lui David Creangă, a 19th-century monument of public interest. The approximately 200-year-old beam-built structure, where milk was processed during Creangă’s childhood, has been preserved in the courtyard of his great-great-great-grandchildren. In the village of Boboiești, Rodica Ciocartau’s workshop displays old folk-art objects from the Pipirig region alongside traditional tools.

The cultural sites mentioned above are therefore located at different points in the commune: the museum is in the administrative centre, Brânzăria is in the village of Dolhești, and the workshop is in the village of Boboiești. In addition to the central collection, Pipirig’s cultural offerings thus include a monument and a workshop with regional objects.

“Pipirig Day” takes place in September and offers an opportunity to experience numerous events with a local character.

Religion

On the journey from Târgu Neamț to Pipirig, turn right from the DN15B national road onto the DC 159 commune road to reach the “Sfântul Nicolae” wooden church. It was built in 1807 to replace an old chapel by Transylvanians who had moved to the area from the mountains, including David Creangă’s grandfather. The church’s bell tower dates from 1864.

The parish museum of the “Sfântul Nicolae” church in Pipirig displays icons from the 18th and 19th centuries. These include an icon of the Virgin Mary with the Child dated 1776. A painted wooden chivot, made in 1841 together with the church’s iconostasis, is also located there.

Routes

European bison live in the wild in the area of Pipirig Commune within Vânători-Neamț Nature Park. Various paths lead from the nature park’s visitor centre through deciduous forests to the bison reserve or the acclimatisation enclosure. There, you can search for European bison with rangers. A tourist route leads from Târgu Neamț via Pipirig to Poiana Largului.
