Discover Văratec: Monastery Ensemble and Mountain Hiking Trail

Văratec combines a monastery ensemble with three churches, the monastic village of Văratec, and the Museum of Ancient Art. The ensemble includes the churches “Adormirea Maicii Domnului”, “Sfântul Ioan Botezatorul”, and “Schimbarea la Fata”. The individual buildings and the museum form the cultural focal point of the townscape.

Culture

The church “Adormirea Maicii Domnului” was built between 1808 and 1812 from river stone and bricks. The church “Naşterea Sfântului Ioan Botezătorul” was built in 1844, while the church “Schimbarea la Faţă” dates from 1847. The ensemble therefore brings together buildings from three different periods of construction.

The church “Naşterea Sfântului Ioan Botezătorul” features a pronounced Baroque style, three towers, a wooden bell tower, and a stone vestibule. The grave of the poet Veronica Micle is located beside the church. Near the eastern apse of the church “Adormirea Maicii Domnului” stands a bronze statue of Safta Brâncoveanu, erected in 1935 and created by the sculptor Ion Jalea.

Casa Lahovari in Văratec is a registered historic monument dating from the late 19th century. The monument number is LMI 2015-NT-II-m-B-10731. The collection is the focal point of the Museum of Ancient Art, while the churches, grave, statue, and monument add individual historical points of reference within the monastery ensemble and the town. Dealul Mare Văratecul is also located in the immediate surroundings of Văratec and is a hill. Dealul Neamţului is another hill in the vicinity of Văratec.
