Monasteries, murals and historical evidence

Agapia Monastery represents several historical layers. The restoration of the historic monument of Agapia Monastery was completed at the beginning of 2009; it was subsequently reopened to tourists and for ecumenical visits. Its murals by Nicolae Grigorescu were executed from 1858 to 1862 and were therefore created later than the Agapia Veche hermitage, which dates from the second half of the 14th century. The Agapia Monastery Museum displays religious objects in four halls: icons from the 16th to the 18th century, old carved and filigree-decorated crosses, manuscripts and old printed works. The Agapia Monastery ensemble is included on the list of historic monuments of Neamț County. The monastery therefore brings together murals, religious collections and heritage conservation.

The Alexandru Vlahuță Memorial House is located in the monastic village of Agapia; the writer Alexandru Vlahuță was born there and spent his childhood there. Another historical trace leads to the Agapia Veche hermitage, which dates from the second half of the 14th century. The new Agapia Monastery was built between 16 October 1642 and 3 September 1644 and consecrated on 12 September 1647.

Forest areas and the nature park

The natural areas also give Agapia its own profile. Codrii de Aramă is a protected forest area in the municipality of Agapia and is associated with oaks, particularly sessile oaks. The nature reserve covers about 10.2 hectares and consists predominantly of approximately one-hundred-year-old oaks. It is located on Filior Hill near the village of Agapia, at an altitude between 550 and 650 metres. Pădurea de Argint is a mixed forest nature reserve of about 2.4 hectares with birch trees; many of the trees are over 100 years old. The protected forest areas bring together different tree species and areas of different sizes. In addition, Vânători-Neamț Nature Park also includes the municipality of Agapia and serves to protect the region’s natural, spiritual and cultural heritage.

The municipality’s transport connections are also important for geographical orientation: National Road DN15C crosses Agapia; the secondary roads DN15F and DN15G form part of this connection between Piatra Neamț and Fălticeni.
