Chitila Between Memory and Nature

Chitila is associated with historical evidence from several eras and different forms of remembrance. The Biserica Sfântul Prooroc Ioan Botezătorul was donated and built by Ion and Florea Olteanu between 1912 and 1913. The plaques on the Obelisc în memoria Eroilor căzuți în primul război mondial Chitila list 28 heroes who fell in the First World War. They also commemorate heroes from Chitila who fell in 1944.

Archaeological Traces from Prehistory to the Middle Ages

The evidence at the Situl arheologic Chitila-Cărămidărie reaches particularly far back. The archaeological site has brought to light numerous historical remains from prehistory, the Bronze Age, the Dacian period, the period of the Roman conquest and the Middle Ages. Near Chitila Fermă, a Carpodacian settlement dating from the 2nd to the 5th century AD has been archaeologically documented. Three residential and workshop buildings from the Bronze Age Tei culture were also identified near Chitila Fermă. Iron ore was reduced in them, and iron, bronze, silver and copper were processed. A Bronze Age settlement of the Tei culture has also been documented there. The archaeological investigations of the Situl arheologic Chitila-Cărămidărie concerned the area of the former brickworks and the area where the Parcul Dendrologic is now located.

Obelisk, Memorial Cross and Fortul Kitila

A stone memorial cross stands in the same green area as the Cruce memorială Chitila Ilfov memorial site, about 15 metres from the obelisk. Fortul Kitila was built by King Carol I as the first fort in the defensive ring around Bucharest and was inaugurated by him personally.

The Dendrological Park as a Green Focal Point

The Parcul Dendrologic din Chitila (Arboretum) is located at Strada Păcii 69 in Chitila and is open from 08:00 to 22:00. The opening hours from 08:00 to 22:00 can be taken into account when planning a day in the park. The Parcul Dendrologic Chitila is considered suitable for relaxed walks and picnics; it is also possible to view numerous ornamental tree and shrub species there. The valley of the Mangul stream is one of the protected natural areas.

Gara Chitila and the Old Royal Railway Line

Railway history is also one of the notable themes of the town. Gara Chitila railway station was the first station on the old royal railway line connecting Bucharest with Târgoviște.
