Discover Domnești: Churches and Archaeology

Domnești is home to an archaeological site on the Sabar and churches from different periods. The Domnești archaeological site lies on the northern bank of the Sabar and stretches from 300 m west of the road to Țegheș to the Domnești–București road. History

Excavations at the Domnești–Școala Veche archaeological site uncovered settlement remains from the Bronze and Iron Ages, the Dacian-Roman period, the 9th and 12th centuries, and the Middle Ages. The chronological sequence therefore extends from the Early Metal Ages through the Dacian-Roman period and the 9th and 12th centuries to the Middle Ages. Domnești–Școala Veche thus preserves traces of several historical periods at a single archaeological site.

Culture

Parohia Domneștii De Sus, also known as the “biserica din Băleanu,” is considered the oldest church in the Domnești municipality. The church of Parohia Domneștii De Sus retains its original elongated nave and measures 18 m in length and 6.60 m in width. The “Izvorul Tămăduirii” Church is an architectural monument in Domnești and was built in 1817. In Cațichea, a masonry church dedicated to Saint Hierarch Spiridon is documented for the year 1808. The church in the Cațichea hamlet, dedicated to Saint Spiridon, was built of masonry in 1865 by members of the community with the assistance of the priest Alexandru. The outdoor altar of Parohia Domneștii de Jos is also one of Domnești’s sacred sites: it is dedicated to Saint Agatha the Martyr. For outdoor sacred sites, current visiting hours can be checked in advance.

Connections

A county road runs through the area of Parohia Domnești–Cațichea. It comes from the direction of Ciorogârla and leads to București; its access point is on Prelungirea Ghencea. The road connection thus establishes a clearly identified link between Ciorogârla, Domnești–Cațichea, and București.
