Culture
At the eastern edge of Leordeni lies the archaeological site of Popești Leordeni – Conacul Costaforu. It is situated on the right bank of the Dâmbovița, on a high terrace. The archaeological remains include a Bronze Age settlement belonging to the Tei culture. The site also includes the ruins of a 19th-century manor house. Thus, this location brings together evidence from the Bronze Age and the remains of a significantly later manor house.
The chronological span of the sites mentioned extends from the Bronze Age Tei culture through the 19th-century manor house and the early 19th-century church to the monastery built between 2003 and 2006. This sequence is complemented by the war memorial, whose inscription and marble plaques specifically identify the local commemorative site.
A monument commemorates the heroes who fell in the First World War. The column bears the inscription “Eroilor din Popești-Leordeni comuna recunoscătoare”. On the sides of the monument, two marble plaques list the names of the heroes. The inscription and plaques connect the monument with Popești-Leordeni and record both the reason for the commemoration and the names of those honoured.
Sacred Sites
The Orthodox Biserica Sfinții Voievozi in Leordeni was built in 1807–1808 by the great boyar Mihail Manu. It was consecrated on 26 March 1811, on Palm Sunday. The construction period, founder and consecration day are therefore recorded for the same church and place its origins within a clearly recognisable chronological sequence.
The founder portraits are located on the west wall of the pronaos. Nicolae Polcovnicul painted them in oils on canvas in 1825. The canvas was subsequently mounted on the wall. At Biserica Sfinții Voievozi, the portraits, their precise location in the pronaos, the artist, the year of creation and the distinctive canvas execution are thus all connected.
The sacred details also remain specific: the consecration day, pronaos, portrait painter and canvas technique supplement the church’s construction details.
Monastery
The “Duminica Sfinților Români” Monastery was built between 2003 and 2006. The Romanian Patriarch Teoctist is regarded as its founder. The monastery lies on the border between Bucharest and Popești-Leordeni. Its location therefore refers to both Bucharest and Popești-Leordeni. The construction period belongs to the more recent history of the area and clearly distinguishes the monastery chronologically from the older Biserica Sfinții Voievozi.
Water and Green Spaces
Balta Floarea Popeștilor covers 5 hectares and is 1–6 metres deep. In Popești-Leordeni, the body of water is designated for sport fishing. Its area and depth range describe its dimensions, while sport fishing specifies its stated use.
Parcul Erou Garian Alexandru covers more than 6,000 square metres and lies in the heart of Popești-Leordeni. Thus, alongside the body of water, the local overview includes a park with a clearly stated size and central location.
