Culture and history

The Palatul Culturii houses four museums of national importance. The Muzeul de Istorie a Moldovei, located there, presents the development of the princely court of Iași. The Mănăstirea Sfinții Trei Ierarhi was built by Vasile Lupu between 1637 and 1639. On the outside, it is distinguished by an appearance designed with stone ornaments resembling stone lace.

The Mănăstirea Cetățuia preserves a fortified complex with high stone walls, battlements and a defensive walkway, a monumental entrance tower, and four corner towers for defence. In Țicău, the Bojdeuca Ion Creangă was opened to the public on 15 April 1918, thereby becoming Romania’s first literary memorial museum. Ion Creangă wrote all his stories there, as well as the famous Amintiri din Copilărie.

The Muzeul Sitului Arheologic Cucuteni provides an overall view of the excavated tumulus. It also protects a princely tomb dating from the 4th to the 3rd century BC and displays original archaeological pieces from the Cucuteni culture. The Palatul „Alexandru Ioan Cuza“ de la Ruginoasa, which today houses the Muzeul Memorial „Alexandru Ioan Cuza“, has preserved features of the Neo-Gothic style to this day.

The Casa Pogor served as the seat of the literary society „Junimea“. The Muzeul Mihai Eminescu consists of three halls: two on the ground floor – the Sala Destinului with a zodiac mosaic and the Sala de Arta – as well as the Sala Prieteniei on the upper floor.

Nature and the city

Parcul Expoziției is a park of approximately 5.4 hectares on Copou Hill. It offers two spacious children’s playgrounds and a specially designed skateboarding area. Parcul Copou is Iași’s oldest urban park and was laid out in 1833. At its centre stands the Monument of the Organic Regulation, known as the „Obeliscul cu lei“. Also located there is the lime tree known as Teiul lui Eminescu, which is estimated to be more than 450 years old.

The Grădina Palas offers a comprehensive view of the Palatul Culturii. The Grădina Botanică Iași covers approximately 100 hectares and includes lakes and mineral water springs. Its traditional annual exhibitions bring together scientific plant collections and are of particular interest to visitors from Romania and abroad.

Wine

The vineyard area of Cotnari covers more than 1,750 hectares and includes grape varieties such as Grasă de Cotnari, Tămâioasă Românească, Frâncușă and Fetească Albă. Crama Cotnari has 15 cellars extending over more than 2 km, which are considered the winery’s main tourist attraction. A reservation is required to visit Crama Cotnari; a package with three wine tastings is offered.

Activities

The „7 Coline pe bicicletă“ activity route runs across the seven hills of Galata, Cetăţuia, Repedea, Bucium, Şorogari, Breazu and Copou and is 60 km long. It runs mostly along unpaved paths; numerous return routes to the city also make it possible to complete only part of the route.

Events and mobility

The Muzeul „Vasile Pogor“ organises cultural events, exhibitions, fairs and activities for children. The House of Museums and the Pogor Museum organise readings, workshops and other events, including for particularly vulnerable groups. Public transport in Iași includes trams, buses and minibuses.
