Discover Roşcani: Nature, Churches and Beekeeping

The landscape of Roşcani is considered a hilly plain where broad interfluves, wide valleys with ponds and gently asymmetrical hills come together. The three landforms exist within the same landscape without merging into a single topographic category.

Nature

The Pădurea Roșcani Natura 2000 site lies within the municipality of Roşcani. It covers 56 ha and is therefore spatially confined to a clearly designated area within the municipality. The area represents the Pădurea Roșcani natural environment, not the entire municipal territory.

Pădurea Roșcani was designated to protect the community-interest habitat types 62C0* “Ponto-Sarmatian steppes” and 91I0* “Euro-Siberian steppic vegetation with Quercus spp.” The protection mandate thus concerns two expressly named habitat types.

The rich occurrence of Carpinus orientalis is significant for Pădurea Roșcani. There, the species reaches the northern limit of its natural range in Romania. The species boundary adds a precise regional reference within the country to the protection mandate.

On the one hand, ponds are part of the landscape of the wide valleys; on the other hand, numerous ponds in the municipality of Roşcani are among its tourist and recreational attractions. Thus, the natural landform is combined with an explicitly stated tourist and recreational classification.

Culture

The wooden Church of Sfântul Gheorghe in Roșcani was built in 1780. The place of worship is therefore linked to the local architectural history through a specifically stated year of construction.

The exterior design of the wooden church in Rădeni–Roșcani is characterised by a clear sequence: it was first plastered with clay on the outside and then whitewashed. Its porch is located on the north side. The clay plaster, whitewash and the direction of the porch together create a precisely identifiable exterior.

A church feast is indicated for 4 August for the Orthodox Church of Sfânta Maria in Roșcani. The Day of the Roşcani municipality is indicated for the second week of October. The church feast therefore falls in August, while the municipal event is assigned to October. Church feast dates and municipal celebrations are time-specific occasions whose dates travellers should check before departure.

Local Life

Roşcani is considered a beekeeping area with more than 800 bee colonies. At the same time, beekeeping is regarded in the municipality of Roşcani as a shared passion spanning generations. These two characteristics combine the scale of beekeeping with its transmission across generations.

In Roşcani, honey is considered a food and, after fermentation, also a beverage. The change from food to beverage is tied to fermentation.

Geographical Location

The DN24 national road crosses the municipality of Roşcani and runs east of the municipality. For Roşcani, both the road’s route through the municipal territory and its eastern location are therefore specified.
