Plaiul Nucului lies on a broad plateau south of the summit of Ivănețu. In Ținutul Buzăului, Plaiul Nucului is the highest settlement. The mountain ridges near Plaiul Nucului are among the defining landscape features, and the UNESCO Geopark Ținutul Buzăului recommends exploring them.

Landscape

The natural area includes nearby Lacul Mocearu, also known as Mociaru. The lake is a freshwater karst lake surrounded by forest. Its formation can apparently be traced back to a collapse caused by the dissolution of an underground layer of salt. Lacul Mocearu is considered almost untouched. It lies approximately 3–4 kilometres from Plaiul Nucului, along a cart track. The approximate distance and the condition of the track are therefore among the characteristic details associated with this body of water. In addition to the water, the forest surroundings, geological formation and cart track also shape the description of Lacul Mocearu. The second commonly used name, Mociaru, is likewise part of the designation of this lake.

Trails and night sky

The Culmea Ivănețu massif is crossed by roads and trails. They connect the surrounding massifs and tourist areas in the northern Subcarpathians. Lopătari and Aluniș are among the places mentioned along these connections. Access to Lacul Mocearu is also clearly located geographically: the access road begins on the DJ203K between Lopătari and Plaiul Nucului. For stargazing, the UNESCO Geopark Ținutul Buzăului considers almost every place near Plaiul Nucului suitable. Thus, within the same landscape area, there are both the paths crossing the massif and the connections to the places mentioned, as well as the separately described access road to the lake. The regional setting of these paths and tourist areas is the northern Subcarpathians.

Different trail connections therefore coexist within the landscape area: the mountain ridges near Plaiul Nucului, the trails through Culmea Ivănețu, the connection to Lopătari and Aluniș, and the cart track to Lacul Mocearu, approximately 3–4 kilometres away. The northern Subcarpathians form the broader regional setting for the tourist areas mentioned.

Culture

The dense forests of Plaiul Nucului are associated with the local music of the Buzău area. In the village of Plaiul Nucului, the 36th edition of the “Pe Plaiul Nucului” festival was scheduled for 13 July. The festival was dedicated to music and local traditions. The planned programme included traditional customs and songs as well as contemporary artistic performances. The event therefore encompasses both traditional forms of local cultural life and modern performances. In the cultural profile of the place, the festival thus brings together references to local music, traditional customs and songs, and contemporary artistic contributions. The place name Plaiul Nucului appears both in the name of the village and in the name of the event.
