Cozieni in the UNESCO Geopark Ținutul Buzăului

Cozieni is one of the 18 communes belonging to the UNESCO Geopark Ținutul Buzăului. In the Ținutul Buzăului Geopark, visitors can discover the youngest volcanoes in Cozieni, whose eruption has only just begun. This gives the area a combination of geological features and a landscape in which individual natural sites and smaller settlements are closely interconnected.

Nature, Geology and Stargazing

The Sferele de la Cozieni are located near the Bârza forest. At the upper end of the same forest lies Vârful Zăpodia, which offers panoramic views over the Buzău Valley. The two places mentioned are therefore located in different parts of the forest and complement each other as distinct landscape features.

Along a spring in the village of Fata lui Nan are the Trovants of Fața lui Nan. On the ridge of Colțeni, there is a natural stone wall with fossilized shell fossils. The Trovants of Cocârceni are smaller formations considered spectacular. The Trovants of Punga are associated with the legend of Dochia. Thus, various forms and narratives appear side by side in the commune: a spring, a stone wall, fossils and the associations handed down around the trovants.

Culture and Historical Evidence

The Bălănești–Pe poduri settlement belongs to the Neolithic Gumelnița culture. The Neolithic Gumelnița settlement is located in the administrative unit of Cozieni, in the village of Bălănești. The archaeological site therefore belongs geographically to Cozieni, but is specifically located in Bălănești.

The wooden church of “Sfinții Voievozi” in Bălănești bears the year 1839. In Cocârceni stands the Church of the Holy Martyr Theodore Tiron; it bears the year 1819 and is considered a church made of masonry and wood. In Cozieni, the church of “Adormirea Maicii Domnului” is dated to the period 1903–1913.

At the former site of Mărculești, now merged with Bălănești, stands the church of “Adormirea Maicii Domnului”, which is dated to 1834. The place name thus refers both to the former site and to its present-day connection with Bălănești.

In the hamlet of Teișu in the commune of Cozieni, Virgil Bâgiu’s collection comprises hundreds of objects that were once useful to the collector’s ancestors. The historical evidence therefore ranges from a Neolithic settlement and churches from different construction periods to a private collection from a rural setting.

Events

The event “Ziua Comunei Cozieni – Târg Tradițional de Sfânta Maria” has been announced for the commune of Cozieni. It is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, 15 August 2026. Folk music singers and folklore ensembles are expected to perform at the event; Diana Ștefănescu has been announced as a special guest.

Geographical Context

In the Bălăneasa area, county roads branch off toward the settlements of Cozieni, Bozioru, Brăești and Odăile. Cozieni is therefore geographically connected to several places linked to one another through this area.
