Spa town among hills and mineral springs

Sărata-Monteoru is situated in a quiet hilly landscape surrounded by forests and lush vegetation. The town combines marked hiking trails, mineral springs and traces of history. Sărata-Monteoru has a tourist information centre. In the centre are Ștrandul Paradis and Izvorul nr. 6: The bath is considered the oldest and largest bathing facility in terms of area in the spa town, with therapeutic saltwater pools, while the spring provides mineral water for internal use.

Hiking trails, cycling tours and adventure

Two trails provide clear orientation for an active day. Traseul 1 – Triunghi Roșu leads from the tourist information point via the bed of the Sărata River, Casa de Apă and Stânca lui Monu to Lacul Verde and takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes. Traseul 2 – Bulina Roșie leads from the tourist information point via the entrance to the forest road and Cazanul Mare to Mina de Petrol and takes about 2 hours. Sărata-Monteoru is also a starting point for cycling tours. One tour is about 30 km long, has around 800 m of positive elevation gain and is of medium difficulty. At Dealul Istrița, there are air currents suitable for paragliding. The adventure park has four courses for adults and two courses for children, with a total of 75 elements.

Mineral water and traces of spa history

Sărata-Monteoru is known for mineral waters containing salt, iodine, bromine, magnesium, sulphur and calcium, as well as mineral sediment mud from natural sulphur springs. These are recommended for the treatment of musculoskeletal, gynaecological, gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary diseases. The first saltwater pools of the future spa town were built between 1888 and 1895. Behind Izvorul nr. 6 are the ruins of the Vechile bazine. They have the status of a historic monument and served as an open-air treatment facility. Mina de Petrol is also a historic monument and is considered a rare example of oil extraction using mining methods in Europe and worldwide. Public access to the active Mina de Petrol is not permitted for safety reasons.

Archaeology, architectural heritage and events

The history of the town includes the Church of “Adormirea Maicii Domnului” and the La Cetățuie archaeological site. The church was built in 1876 by Grigore C. Monteoru, who founded the spa town. The Monteoru culture from the Bronze Age was discovered on Cetățuia Hill in the eastern part of the town. The Sărata Monteoru – Poiana Scorușului cult complex is dedicated to religious and ritual practices and is being archaeologically researched. Vila Monteoru was built in 1888 and is situated in an English-style park, which is now referred to as a dendrological park. Cultural and sporting events take place annually in Sărata-Monteoru. “Zilele Stațiunii Sărata Monteoru” is considered the spa town’s celebration in July.
