Discover Nehoiu: Nature, Water and Culture

Nehoiu lies along the upper course of the Buzău. The town is situated at an elevation of 450–500 metres in the basin of the same name. This basin lies at the foot of the Munții Siriu and Podu Calului.

The location thus connects the course of the Buzău with the two named mountain ranges. Elevation, basin and upper course describe the geographical setting in which Nehoiu’s natural and cultural attractions are distributed.

Nature and Trails

Nehoiu is a starting point for hikes. The trails lead towards the Munții Siriu, Podu Calului and Penteleu. In the wider regional surroundings of Nehoiu, the Masivul Penteleu has marked hiking trails. These trails are accessible to both beginners and experienced hikers.

Water

A rafting and kayaking route on the Buzău begins at the Nehoiașu hydroelectric power station. The power station is located near the confluence of the Bâsca and Buzău rivers. From this starting point, the route leads towards Nehoiu. It extends as far as the Valea Lupului area near Pătârlagele.

The route description thus specifies a starting point, a direction of flow and an area at the other end of the route. The location near Pătârlagele preserves the regional classification of the endpoint area.

The rafting route is of moderate difficulty. Fast and calm sections alternate along it.

Culture

The Orthodox Cathedral of “Sfântul Mare Mucenic Gheorghe” is located in Nehoiu. It was built in the old Romanian style. The building displays influences from the Brâncovenesc period.

The wooden church of “Adormirea Maicii Domnului” stands in Nehoiașu, Nehoiu town, Buzău County. It is a historic monument.

The historic industrial complex of the Göetz sawmill is located in Nehoiu. The Austrian company Göetz built it between 1908 and 1910. It was built to process wood from the Buzău Mountains in the upper course area.

Gaura Tătarilor is located near Mlăjet. The rock settlement is one of the two rock settlements discovered within the boundaries of Nehoiu.

The cultural attractions thus include religious buildings, a historic industrial monument and a rock settlement. The location details range from Nehoiu and Nehoiașu to Mlăjet, preserving the different sites within the town’s administrative area.

History

The former Nehoiu railway station building was inaugurated in 1909. The Buzău–Nehoiașu railway line connects the city of Buzău with places in the Buzău Valley. The connection thus extends from Buzău to the places along the Buzău Valley.

The name Buzău–Nehoiașu identifies the two places between which the railway line runs. The station building and the railway line are therefore among the explicitly mentioned historical and transport-history features of Nehoiu.
