Discover Ciuta: History, Gorge and Trails

The Buzău Valley, or Buzău River, depression corridor begins near Ciuta. There it forms a gorge-like valley constriction between 300 and 500 metres wide. The summit of Cetățuia on Dealul Ciolanu rises above the village. Its elevation is 631.7 metres. A distinctive terrain incision and a clearly named summit thus meet in the village.

There are gypsum and salt outcrops in the surroundings of the village of Ciuta. Limestone deposits also occur in this area.

Landscape and Views

The Fântâna lui Mihai Viteazul is located in Ciuta. It stands at the junction of the DJ 203G and the DN10 Buzău–Brașov. At the same time, the Fântâna is situated at a viewpoint with a wide view over the Buzău Valley. The site thus combines a named road junction with a viewpoint and a historic monument.

Culture and History

The church “Intrarea în Biserică a Maicii Domnului” was founded or built in Ciuta on 2 August 1762. A cross-shaped monument stands in the cemetery of Ciuta in front of the church “Intrarea Maicii Domnului în Biserică”. The monument includes a statue of a contemplative soldier. The church, cemetery and monument thus form the historic points of reference in the village.

The Fântâna lui Mihai Viteazul commemorates the 375th anniversary of Mihai Viteazul’s march through the Buzău Valley towards Transylvania. It is a concrete monument. The structure is approximately 15 metres long and clad in shell limestone.

The sculptor Vasile Ștefănoiu was born in Ciuta. He grew up among stone craftsmen. The stone craftsmen supported artists from the Măgura sculpture workshop.

Routes

The tourist route through the Valea Nișcovului leads to the Fântâna lui Mihai Viteazul in Ciuta. From Haleș, the route follows the DJ 203G towards Ciuta. It continues to the junction with the DN10 Buzău–Brașov.

The Fântâna lui Mihai Viteazul also forms one endpoint of the tourist wine route Drumul turistic al Cramelor. The other endpoint of this route is in Pietroasele. The two endpoints give the route a clearly named connection between Ciuta and Pietroasele.

Stone and Craftsmanship

Stone from the Ciuta–Măgura quarry area was used for the sculptures of the Măgura open-air museum. In the Măgura commune, stone masonry was among the residents’ craft activities alongside agriculture. Pottery was also one of these craft activities there. The material of the sculptures and the professions mentioned point to two different aspects of the local craft tradition: stone and ceramics.
