Town History Between Rivers and Architecture

The Mariacki Church was built between 1326 and 1364, founded by Duchess Zofia, the wife of Barnim IV. It is currently in use and administered by the Catholic parish of pw. W.N.M.P. It is therefore part of both Sławno’s historical development and its present-day townscape. The Church of św. Antoniego z Padwy tells another story of the town’s religious history: Sławno architect Fridrich Suhr designed it, and it was built in 1925–1928 at the initiative of Father Franciszek Niering, the first priest of the Catholic curacy.

The Church of św. Antoniego z Padwy also houses a Renaissance triptych from the 16th century. It comes from the workshop of Frankfurt sculptor Schnitzer and depicts five scenes from the life of the Mother of God. For visitors interested in art and regional architectural history, this work offers a tangible connection to another period in the town’s history. The Sławno Lapidarium offers a different perspective: its collection of preserved graves from before 1945 bears witness to the continuity of the cultural heritage of the Sławno region.

Regional history also has a place of its own: the Izba Muzealna was established in the cultural centre building at 2 Cieszkowskiego Street. Its aim is to promote the history of the region and commemorate the 700th anniversary of the granting of town rights. Routes, Cycling and Events

Those who prefer to explore outdoors can consider the routes that pass through Sławno: the Pomeranian Way of St. James and a blue hiking trail. For cycling, there are almost 3 km of cycle paths encircling the town. The European Route of Brick Gothic also passes through Sławno. It connects countries, regions, towns, cultures and people through the shared language of architecture. Together, these routes offer different ways to include the town and its cultural themes in your travel plans; specific route lengths are given only for the cycle paths.

Events held annually on fixed dates include the Wind Orchestra Festival and International Święców Day with its Fair of Many Cultures. The Wind Orchestra Festival is a regional cultural event celebrating the town’s heritage. Getting Here and Choosing a Holiday Base

Both road and rail can help you plan your journey: National Road 6 runs through Sławno and connects Szczecin with Gdańsk. From Sławno railway station, in the western part of the town, direct train services run to Warszawa, Szczecin, Gdańsk, Poznań and Kraków. The station was built in the 1860s.
