The Castle and Churches Tell the Story of the Town

The Castle of the Pomeranian Dukes was built on an island between 1352 and 1372; its floor plan has largely been preserved to this day. The castle museum houses exhibits on interior furnishings, crafts, Pomeranian ethnography, religious art and Eastern art. There is also a multimedia exhibition about the life and work of Erik of Pomerania, featuring interactive games and a multimedia mirror. The castle also currently hosts numerous temporary exhibitions.

The churches also have their own distinctive features. The Pomeranian Mausoleum is located in St Mary's Church and contains the sarcophagi of King Erik, Elisabeth, wife of the last Duke of Pomerania, and Jadwiga, a Pomeranian princess. 1321 is traditionally considered the year construction of the church began. St Gertrude's Church dates from the 15th century and combines Scandinavian Gothic architecture with a hexagonal floor plan and a dodecagonal ambulatory. Its organs, dating from 1860, are used not only for church services but also by Polish and international virtuosos at the annual summer organ festivals.

Harbour and Lighthouse in Darłówko

Darłówko is the coastal district of Darłowo. The lighthouse stands at the base of the eastern breakwater, where the Wieprza River flows into the Baltic Sea. The tower is 22 metres high; its light guides ships to the harbour and reaches almost 30 kilometres. Its rectangular floor plan is also noteworthy: it is the only lighthouse in Poland built in this shape. In summer, excursion boats modelled on historic ships are available at the fishing and tourist harbour.

A bascule bridge over the Wieprza connects Darłówko Wschodnie and Darłówko Zachodnie. It is considered the only sliding bridge in Poland and one of three bridges of this type in Europe. In Darłówko Wschodnie, a two-level promenade runs along the top of the coastal breakwater: the lower walkway is 168 metres long and the upper one 156 metres.

Routes for Culture, Cycling and Nature

Those who want to explore Darłowo on foot will find several different route ideas. The literary trail “In the Footsteps of Tyrmand’s Characters” runs from the railway station in Darłowo to the lighthouse in Darłówko. Eight sculptures commemorate Leopold Tyrmand’s connections to Darłowo. The Medieval Monuments Trail, also known as the Cistercian Trail, passes through eleven coastal towns, including Darłowo. The West Pomeranian section of the Velo Baltica cycle route, which runs through the town, is another option for a cycling trip.

The green Windmill Trail begins at the Castle of the Pomeranian Dukes and then continues through Cisowo and along the southern shore of Lake Kopań. Another route option is the blue Nature Reserve Trail: it begins in Darłówko, ends in Polanów and passes near the Janiewickie Bagno and Wieleń nature reserves. On the western dune, a nature promenade about 600 metres long offers views of the Baltic Sea and coastal flora.

Inkula Park adds other ways to observe nature. Many fish species and ducks live in the water; swans can occasionally be seen there. The protected yellow water-lily also grows in the park. There is a fenced dog run with various equipment and facilities for training.
