Pieszcz in West Pomerania is a destination for anyone interested in rural architecture and the history of a village. The church, with its unusual two-aisled nave, is particularly distinctive. There are also traces of a medieval manor, a 19th-century manor forge and historic parks.

A village church with a distinctive roofline

The church is considered an original example of a rural church in West Pomerania. Its nave has two aisles; the building also has separate roof structures and parallel roof ridges. Several clearly identifiable architectural features thus shape the impression of the building, rather than leaving the description at the general label “village church.” Visitors interested in architecture can look at the interplay between the ground plan and the roof design: the two-aisled layout, the separate roof structures and the parallel ridges are each part of what makes this building distinctive.

Its location is also firmly rooted in the layout of the village: the church stands in the northeast of Pieszcz, at the fork where the main road meets the road to the former manor. The historic village layout is still discernible. When exploring Pieszcz, you can therefore consider both an individual building and the village’s inherited structure.

Manor traces and local history

The church’s history is connected with the village’s patron lords. The Below family initially served as patrons of the church; from the 17th century, the von Krockow family also took on this role. This change places the building within the local history of the manor without losing sight of its architectural features.

A hill and a moat remain from the medieval castle complex of the Below family. The history handed down about the palace at Pieszcz Manor A also recalls a change in the village’s appearance: the palace was demolished in the mid-1990s, while the ruins of the manor’s farm buildings remain. The manor complex with Park “A” is part of Pieszcz’s cultural heritage. These remnants and their heritage designation offer a distinct way to explore the history of the manor, different from looking at the church.

The 19th-century manor forge is another testament to rural history. It was entered in the regional register of monuments on 1 August 1989 under number A-300. Its function as a forge and its age make it a different historical subject from the church and castle remains: in Pieszcz, sacred architecture, manor history and a craft building stand side by side.

Parks and historic open spaces

The parks also contribute to Pieszcz’s cultural character. The former palace park dates from the 19th century and covers 1.5 hectares. This area and its date give the park a distinct place in the village’s history. The manor park “B” is also part of Pieszcz’s cultural heritage. Park “B” and the manor complex with Park “A” are distinct named components of the local cultural heritage.

Another historic site is the former cemetery on the road to Pałowo, where old trees remain. The trees give this place a character of its own, different from that of the manor parks. Anyone interested in the village’s historical layers will find a variety of points of interest in Pieszcz: the church’s architecture, the remains of the Below castle complex, manor buildings and the surviving park and cemetery areas.
