De Puthof and farmsteads

Reijmerstok developed near the medieval De Puthof manor farm complex. The enclosed farm complex was formerly called “Bokkenheufke” and was first mentioned in 1375. One farm after another was built along the road in Reijmerstok. The farm complex and the farmhouses along the road provide tangible historical points of reference at the entrance to the village. Together, they comprise an enclosed farm complex and a series of farmsteads that developed along the road.

Churches and local history

The Roman Catholic Church of Sint Franciscus van Assisië was built in 1922 to a design by the architect Jos Wielders from Sittard and features Expressionist elements. Beside this church stands the converted old church, which was built from marl in 1838. The new building from 1922 and the older marl church differ in construction period and material. Thus, the church square brings together an Expressionist church building and an older church built from marl.

The statue De Reijmer stands in the square by the church. It depicts a seated adviser.

Art and festivals

Every two years, the gates open on Whit Monday for the art exhibition “De Poorten van Reijmerstok”. Reijmerstok is also the setting for the annual Gulpener hop harvest festivals. The two events differ significantly in terms of planning a stay: the exhibition returns every two years on Whit Monday, while the hop harvest festivals take place annually. Culture enthusiasts can therefore include an art event and a hop harvest festival separately in their itinerary.

Hiking in the Gulp Valley

The “Heuvels en dorpen in het Gulpdal” hiking route runs via hiking junctions and passes through Reijmerstok. Nature and a village atmosphere alternate along the route. The hiking junctions divide the route into individual sections. For planning a day out, the section through Reijmerstok can be considered alongside the landscape sections. This makes it possible to divide the route into smaller stretches without removing the village area from the route.

Gentle hills, the winding Gulp, open fields and tree-lined field margins define the landscape. With its winding course, the Gulp adds its own shape to the landscape, while the open fields and tree-lined field margins flank the surroundings. When observing the landscape along the way, the hills, Gulp, fields and field margins remain tangible parts of the route. When planning by section, the nature passages and the village area can be included together in the day’s itinerary. This allows the transition between a village atmosphere and open countryside to be taken into account within the same route.
