Holiday apartment in Epen: Mills, Half-Timbered Houses and Hiking Trails

Epen is situated in an area rich in forests and springs. Epen has many half-timbered houses, which are associated with the historically relatively poor rural surroundings. The Geul is also the focal point of several mills, while hiking trails through the Geul Valley combine nature observation with architectural history.

Watermills and rural architectural history

The Bovenste Molen is a historic watermill complex on the Geul. It consists of a stone mill building, a factory building, a residential house, as well as half-timbered barns and stables. The oldest structural traces of the Bovenste Molen in the present-day building date from the 15th century. In addition to the mill building, the complex therefore includes various building functions: a factory, a residential house, as well as barns and stables.

The Winbergermolen is also known as the Epermolen. It is located on the Geul and was built as a grain mill. Another turbine-driven watermill on the Geul is located at Plaatweg 1 in Epen. This complex consists of two buildings made of rubble stone and brick. Half-timbering, rubble stone and brick therefore appear in different architectural forms at the mill sites; in the case of the Winbergermolen, its use as a grain mill is also explicitly linked to its construction.

Church architecture in Epen

Sint Paulus' Bekering is a neoclassical single-nave church with an integrated western tower. It was built to replace a Romanesque predecessor.

Hiking trails through the Geul Valley

The renewed hiking route near Epen is a tribute to Eli Heimans (1861–1914). The “Dwars door het Geuldal” hiking route is 6 kilometres long. The Eli-Heimans Route uses several quotations as a guide through the Geul Valley. For a hike near Epen, “Dwars door het Geuldal” therefore provides a specific route length, while the Eli-Heimans Route is guided by quotations. When choosing a route, the six kilometres of one trail and the quotation-based guide of the other can be considered separately.

Zinc flora and geological history

The Zinc Flora hiking route leads to a Natuurmonumenten nature reserve, where the zinc violet is particularly visible in spring. It also leads to the Heimans Quarry, where Carboniferous rock layers are visible at the surface. For nature enthusiasts, this route therefore offers two specific subjects for observation: the seasonally conspicuous plant and the visible Carboniferous layers. The reference to spring relates to observing the plant, while the Heimans Quarry represents the geological aspect of the trail.

The Volmolen south of Epen

The Volmolen is located 300 metres south of the car park on Bennetweg in Epen and can only be reached on foot from there. The Volmolen could be visited every Saturday from April through October. Anyone planning a visit therefore has the car park as a starting point, followed by a walk. The visiting period runs from spring into autumn and is linked to Saturdays.
