Wijlre combines sacred architectural history, contemporary art, a watermill documented as far back as the Middle Ages, and various hiking trails, offering a range of thematic points of interest. Those planning a holiday apartment in Wijlre can develop different travel ideas around these themes: culture, walks, garden art and regional history can be combined into a varied day of holiday activities.

Art, Church Hill and Music

The Sint Gertrudiskerk stands in a central position on Wijlre’s church hill, surrounded by a cemetery. Its neoclassical cross-shaped church was later extended with a Neo-Romanesque transept, choir and tower. A special connection between history and modern art emerged in 1995, when the nave received stained-glass windows based on designs by Jan Dibbets. Since 1998, the Stichting Orgelkring Wijlre has organised several organ concerts every year in July and August on the monumental Müller organ of St. Gertrudiskerk.

Watermill and Art from Limburg

The Wijlre watermill has medieval origins; its earliest written mention dates from 2 April 1411. Today, it is often associated with the name “Molen van Otten” and is the only mill in Limburg equipped with two water wheels. The former art and collection house was located directly beside Wijlré-Gulpen railway station in a former fruit warehouse and presented thematically arranged objects from the period between 1870 and 1970. Works of art by Tineke van Dien are displayed and produced in the reception room; her modern paintings were characterised by the use of colour and interplay of lines found in the Limburg landscape.

Routes between Art, Gardens and the Brewery

At Buitenplaats Kasteel Wijlre, visitors can walk along the moat and view modern sculptures in the garden. The estate combines contemporary art, architecture, cultural heritage and nature, and presents an international programme of exhibitions and activities for the public every year. Visitors can also explore the estate via the Vlinderroute, Geurroute and Greyometer. The “Langs kastelen en brouwerijen Gulpen” hiking route passes Buitenplaats Kasteel Wijlre and the Brand Bierbrouwerij in Wijlre. The Brand Bierbrouwerij is believed to have opened in 1340 and is considered the oldest brewery in the Netherlands.

Cartils and the Landscape along the Geul

South of Wijlre lies Kasteel Cartils at the confluence of the Geul and Gulp, between agricultural land and forests. Buitenplaats Cartils, whose house is of medieval origin, comprises a main building, a gate tower with an adjoining farm, two old barns, a garden wall, two gates and a garden house.
