The restoration of calcareous grassland is being carried out around Eyserbos. This type of grassland is rare in the Netherlands. On the western side of the forest is also the only calcareous arable field in Het Limburgs Landschap. Among other plants, blue pimpernel, corn salad and lesser spurge grow there. The Eyserbeek flows through Eys; there are also valleys with babbling streams around the village, in which kingfishers may be found. Those with different interests will therefore find both open landscapes and waterside nature scenes here.

Hiking trails with different experiences

The “Langs Eyserbeek en Eyserbosweg Eys” hiking route leads through a landscape of gentle hills, green fields and beautiful panoramic views. It starts in Eys, follows hiking junctions through the hilly landscape around the village and partly follows the Eyserbeek. One section runs along the Eyserbosweg, a well-known climb that is also part of the Amstel Gold Race. This route thus combines a nature experience with a cycling-famous stretch, without requiring both perspectives to constitute the same travel experience.

Another option is the “Tussen Eys en Nijswiller” hiking route, which can be followed using red posts. For a historical view of the village, the monument walk through Eys is a good choice. It starts and ends at St. Agatha’s Church on Mesweg in Eys. The walk is not signposted; an accompanying booklet can be ordered or collected from the Visit Zuid-Limburg shop in Gulpen. These differences help you choose a suitable activity based on your preferred level of guidance and interests.

Culture, short golf and special village experiences

The Mariagrot Eys is carved into a hillside. Beneath it is a former shelter bunker built by miners. Taverne Lambieck is also one of the places offering a specific experience: ceramic workshops are held there. Those who want to combine exercise with a playful activity can enjoy recreational short golf at Eyserhof. The activity is intended both for experienced golfers and for people picking up a golf club for the first time. Visitors can reserve a starting time for this.

On the southern slope of Eys lies the vineyard of Domein Aldenborgh, in calcareous marl containing flint. The vineyard completely avoids the use of crop sprays. Another regional specialty awaits you at the Eyserhalte: Limburg’s first truffle garden was established there in 2020. The development of truffles on Limburg soil is presented as an experience, and a harvest is anticipated. Dishes are also served at the Eyserhalte using as many local products as possible.
