Heraklion: Culture, City Walls and Rural Crete
Accommodation in Heraklion
Heraklion offers different ways to experience Crete: museums and Venetian buildings shape its cultural side, while vineyards, olive groves and paths characterise the municipality’s rural areas. When planning your trip, it’s worth first deciding what you want to focus on: would you like to explore art and history, discover a range of activities with children, or spend time on rural paths?
Museums: From El Greco to the Earthquake Simulator
The Historical Museum of Crete displays two paintings by El Greco, dating from 1569 and 1570. They are the artist’s only works on Crete. The museum also has a collection of personal belongings and manuscripts belonging to Cretan writer Nikos Kazantzakis. Art and literature meet here in different forms: through the paintings of an artist and the personal records of a writer.
The Heraklion Archaeological Museum presents representative evidence of Cretan prehistory and early history, as well as later history, from the Neolithic period to Roman times. Those interested in a long historical span will find a different perspective here than at the Historical Museum. The Natural History Museum of Crete offers yet another focus: it features the Enceladus earthquake simulator and interactive exhibits and games for children and adults. Families can therefore explore both historical subjects and hands-on activities.
Venetian Buildings and Routes Through Heraklion
Koules was built by the Venetians to protect the pier and harbour. The Loggia in Heraklion also dates from the Venetian period: the building was constructed in the 16th century. The pedestrianised 25 August Street runs between the Old Harbour and Lion Square. These clearly identified places offer useful reference points if you’re interested in the city’s historic centre. Visitors can walk along Heraklion’s city walls and enjoy views over the city.
Other cultural stops offer a range of different focuses. The Basilica of San Marco now houses the municipal art gallery as well as art and handicraft exhibitions. The Cathedral of Agios Minas is dedicated to Heraklion’s patron saint and is one of the largest churches in Greece. The Basilica of Agia Ekaterini was built in 1555; in the 16th and 17th centuries, it was home to a renowned school for Renaissance painters and writers. This means you can focus your choices on architectural history, art or the city’s religious history, rather than grouping every site under a single theme.
Rural Paths, Villages and Regional Cuisine
The rural areas of the Municipality of Heraklion have routes for hiking, cycling and driving. There are also opportunities for climbing and caving, as well as forest paths. These different activities let you shape your stay around your preferred way of getting around; the information about the routes does not specify a single route or difficulty level. Vineyards and olive groves are also part of the landscape.
Villages in the rural areas preserve features of Cretan architecture, as well as their own historical heritage. Rural life is therefore shaped not only by paths and scenery, but also by local building styles and history. Traditional tavernas prepare dishes using fresh local produce. If you’d like to include culture, outdoor activities and food in your trip, these offer different themes to plan around, without having to combine them into a set itinerary.
