Heraklion brings together the history of Venetian fortifications, Minoan collections and medieval city districts. Fortresses, a historic city gate, an art gallery and opportunities for walks give the city its many different facets. During your stay, you can decide whether you would rather explore architectural and urban history, plan museum visits or experience Heraklion on foot.

Venetian fortresses and historic city gates

The fortified complex of Venetian Chandakas dates back to the 15th century and is considered one of the most significant monuments of its kind throughout the Mediterranean region. Castello del Moro (Koule), a Venetian coastal fortress, stands at the entrance to the old harbor. Its history also includes other uses: during Turkish rule, Cretan revolutionaries were tortured and imprisoned in its rooms. The upper sections of the fortress and the preserved base of the minaret are alterations dating from this period.

Castello del Moro had two floors. The ground floor contained 26 rooms, which housed captains or were used to store food and ammunition. These details add a sense of the fortress’s former practical function. They show that the building was more than part of the harbor fortifications: its architecture and recorded uses point to different chapters in Heraklion’s history.

Jesus Gate also tells the story of the city’s fortifications: it was one of the city’s three main entrances and stood beside the bastion of the same name on the southern side of the Candia fortifications. After its restoration, the gate was reopened to the public and now serves as a venue for “AN ODYSSEY,” a permanent exhibition about N. Kazantzakis. Please check the current opening hours when planning your visit.

Minoan finds and art in the city

The Heraklion Archaeological Museum has an internationally significant collection of Minoan antiquities. It also displays representative finds from all periods of Cretan prehistory and history, from the Neolithic to Roman times. The museum thus spans a broad period: its Minoan antiquities are part of a collection that also covers the island’s other historical eras.

The Basilica of Saint Mark in Heraklion offers a different cultural perspective. It now houses the municipal art gallery and frequently hosts art and handicraft exhibitions. This complements the archaeological themes with art and crafts. As the exhibitions do not have a fixed visit date, checking the current program may be helpful when planning your day.

Old town and walking routes through Heraklion

Heraklion’s medieval old-town districts offer opportunities for walks in the heart of the city. This is another way to experience the city beyond its individual fortresses and collections: here, exploring the neighborhoods takes center stage. If you want to combine several different interests on one trip, you can plan walks, museum visits and historic buildings as different focal points for your days.

Blue city buses serve Heraklion from early morning until late evening. One city bus route connects the port of Heraklion with Knossos and Skalani. Check the operator’s current timetable for your journey. These connections may be worth considering if you want to include Knossos or Skalani alongside experiences in the city.

Finding the right holiday apartment for your travel plans

When choosing a holiday apartment for a stay in Heraklion, you can start by sorting out your priorities: are you focused on the history of the fortifications, the Archaeological Museum’s collections and walks through the medieval districts, or would you also like to include the city bus route mentioned above in your plans? These questions can help you shape your trip around the experiences you want, without requiring a fixed itinerary. If a particular journey is part of your plans, take the current timetable into account.

Heraklion offers several specific starting points for a cultural city break: the Venetian fortifications, the history of Koule and Jesus Gate, a collection spanning from the Neolithic to Roman times, and art and handicraft exhibitions. Which of these interests you most can shape the character of your stay.
