Crete between gorges, mountains and culture

A coastline stretching more than 1,000 kilometres, over 400 gorges and striking mountain ranges give Crete several very different facets. Added to these are Minoan collections, natural history, marine ecosystems and a cuisine of age-old recipes and modern variations. When planning your trip, it is therefore worth setting a clear priority: should your holiday apartment serve as a base for nature experiences, cultural discoveries or a mix of both? Gorges, mountains and coastal scenery

Crete has more than 400 gorges, making it home to the largest number of gorges in Greece. Samaria Gorge illustrates their scale: it is 16 kilometres long, no more than three metres wide in some places, and defined by sheer walls up to 500 metres high. Wine has been cultivated systematically on Crete for more than 4,000 years. Cretan cuisine also brings together different time periods: it includes both recipes that are centuries old and modern, creative variations. The combination of traditional recipes and new ideas reveals a different side of the island from its archaeological collections or mountains.
