Agía Pelagía lies between the Gulf of Lygaria and Mononaftis Bay, about 21 kilometres from Heraklion. During the summer months, its beach is popular for its fine sand and calm, clear water. At the same time, a small cave temple by the shore, the Church of Agía Pelagía and traces of the ancient city of Apollonia introduce visitors to different aspects of history. This makes it a destination where beach holidays and historical discoveries go hand in hand.

Beach, activities and a coastal path

The beach is a draw for swimming and active days: snorkelling, water sports, diving and boat rentals are available there. If you are planning a day by the water, you can choose between relaxing on the fine sand and taking part in various activities. The beach is equipped with sun loungers and umbrellas, while showers and public toilets add to the facilities.

A pedestrian path runs along the beach, with no cars allowed. The beach is easy to reach via the northern main road. However, the calm, clear water gets somewhat deeper quite abruptly in places. Take this change into account when choosing where to swim.

Church, cave temple and ancient traces

At the northern end of the beach, the small “Finding” temple stands in a cave in the rock. The icon of Agia Pelagia was found at this spot. The cave structure brings a religious history right to the beach, adding a historical dimension to the water activities.

You can see numerous shells among the remains of the ancient city of Apollonia near the main beach. The village is home to the Church of Agía Pelagía, one of Crete’s significant churches to have survived from the Venetian period. It serves as a chapel of Savvathianon Monastery. If you are planning a visit, ask locally about the options.

The church’s feast day is October 8; according to a decree from 1519, it was declared an official holiday. The celebration has been recorded as a special occasion since the end of the 19th century.

Choose a holiday apartment to suit your vacation

If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Agía Pelagía, consider whether you want to spend your vacation days mainly at the beach or also take in cultural and historical sights. The historical connections vary: the cave temple at the northern end of the beach refers to the icon that was found there, the church to the Venetian period and its connection with Savvathianon Monastery, and the remains of Apollonia to antiquity. This can help you decide whether you want your holiday to be shaped more by time at the beach or by an interest in history.

The beach is popular during the summer months, while the church’s feast day falls on October 8. These are different timing considerations if you are choosing between summer beach days and the church festival. If you would like to travel around the feast day, ask in advance about the celebrations taking place during your visit.
