Kapetaniana on the southern slopes of the Asterousia Mountains
Accommodation in Kapetaniana
Kapetaniana combines a striking elevation with sea and mountain panoramas. The village also has religious traditions and activities in the Asterousia Mountains. This raises a question for planning your trip: would you mainly like to discover the landscape and local customs, or focus your days on activities in the wider mountain region?
Panoramic views from the southern slopes
Kapetaniana lies at an elevation of around 750 metres on the southern slopes of the Asterousia Mountains. Its amphitheatrical setting offers panoramic views of the Libyan Sea, the Asterousia Mountains and the summit of Kofinas. The village landscape thus brings together the sea, the mountain range and a striking peak. If you choose your accommodation based on the character of your destination, this elevated setting offers a clear point of reference: views of the sea and mountains from the village.
Church and festival traditions
At Metzolati, a small church dedicated to the Holy Cross stands on the ruins of an ancient mountaintop sanctuary. Its feast day is 14 September. Its present religious dedication and the ruins of the ancient sanctuary make Metzolati a place where different historical layers meet.
A Christian ceremony incorporating pagan elements is still held at the Church of the Holy Cross in Kapetaniana. Another annual date in local tradition is 15 August, when the Feast of the Dormition of the Mother of God is celebrated with a traditional Cretan panigyri. For trip planning, these two dates are useful reference points: the church’s feast day on 14 September and the annual panigyri on 15 August.
Hiking and climbing in the Asterousia Mountains
The wider Asterousia Mountains region has more than 60 hiking trails. These include 14 specially designed routes connecting mountain and lowland sections. There are also seven via ferrata routes on a steep slope in the heart of the mountains. They are equipped with ropes, cables and iron footholds. Hiking and via ferrata thus offer different ways to explore the mountain region; on the via ferrata, the described safety equipment is part of the route.
The climbing areas of Kapetaniana and Agiofarago are also in the wider region: together, they comprise 12 crags with a total of 220 routes of varying difficulty. Spring through autumn is the recommended period for climbing in the region. Climbing should be avoided during the breeding season of the birds of prey that nest on the cliffs, from December to February. This seasonal restriction is an important consideration when planning active days in the mountains.
Kapetaniana offers suitable starting points for horseback riding. Alongside hiking and climbing, horse riding is therefore another distinct activity to consider when planning your trip.
Choose the right focus
When choosing a holiday apartment or house, it helps to first decide what kind of trip you want. Will Kapetaniana’s elevation, panoramic views and religious traditions be the main draw? Or would you prefer to include more activities in the wider Asterousia region?
