Lygaria is a small coastal settlement 21 kilometres northwest of Heraklion and one kilometre east of Agia Pelagia. It lies at an elevation of 18 metres. The bay shapes the character of the place with irregularly shaped rocks, light sand and turquoise water. Small boats dock there. Nearby, the coastal landscape is complemented by a beach accessible only from the sea and waterfalls. A specific trace of the former Panagia Deligara monastery is also one of the features that make Lygaria interesting beyond the sea.

Bay and beach: take a close look at the shore

Stones along the shore make it harder to enter the sea in Lygaria. Small sandy paths provide entry points where stones have been cleared away. This means you will find different types of shoreline at the beach, and conditions may vary from one spot to another. Checking the conditions at the particular stretch of shore will help you plan your beach day. Sun loungers, umbrellas and showers are also available at the beach. Check whether these facilities are available when you visit.

Parasfougario: another way to reach the coast

Nearby, Parasfougario lies west of the headland that shelters Lygaria beach. The beach is accessible only from the sea; from the coast at Lygaria, you can reach it by swimming. This access is an important distinction for your plans, as Parasfougario cannot be assumed to be a beach you can visit by land. Conditions may vary. If you plan to visit this stretch of coast, check the current situation beforehand.

Waterfalls near the coast

The Lygaria waterfalls are a short distance from the settlement’s coast. The tallest waterfall is 10 metres high and forms a small lake at its base. The amount of water flowing depends on rainfall. When planning your visit, it is therefore worth distinguishing between the waterfall’s height and its changing flow: the measurements describe the natural feature, while the water flow depends on precipitation. This makes the waterfalls a different consideration for trip planning from the bay’s enduring shape.

The history of the former monastery

A document from 1610 refers to the former Panagia De Ligara monastery, translated as “of Ligara.” Inside the church, a wooden pedestal on the south wall is the only element that attests to the existence of the former Panagia Deligara monastery. The historic name and this single architectural trace give the history a specific connection to the place. Those interested in culture as well as the coast will find a clearly defined trace here rather than a long list of sights.

A historical note about the beach

In June 2014, the Municipality of Malevizi reported a designated bathing cabin for people with disabilities at Lygaria beach. Special floating wheelchairs made it possible at the time to access the water and take part in water-based therapies. This information refers to the 2014 report. If this facility is important for planning your trip, enquire in advance about its current availability.

Choose the right holiday apartment for your travel interests

These features appeal to different interests; at the waterfalls, water flow also depends on rainfall. Use the landscape and cultural themes you are most keen to explore in Lygaria to guide your search.
