Landscape and Nature

Neustadt/Westerwald lies in a depression in the Nister valley on the Große Nister, at the foot of the Salzburger Kopf, with views of the highest elevations of the Westerwald. Near Neustadt/Westerwald, the Nister Bridge spans the Nister. Near the Nister Bridge, marked trails run along the Nister, offering views of the river landscape. The Krombachtalsperre reservoir, the largest standing body of water in the High Westerwald, is also nearby.

The nearby Fuchskaute nature reserve covers 40.2 hectares and was designated a protected area in 1984. The nearby Holzbach Gorge is one of the oldest nature reserves in the Westerwald; there, the stream has carved out a gorge up to 30 metres deep.

Hiking Trails

At the nearby Fuchskaute, the Arnika Circular Trail uses information boards to provide information about the local flora, fauna and history. At the nearby Seitenstein, the WesterwaldSteig and local trails provide safe access for viewing the natural monument. The VR1 hiking trail passes through the High Westerwald, running through forests and meadows to the Fuchskaute, the highest elevation in the Westerwald.

Near the Holzbach Gorge, the R29 hiking trail runs along both sides of the stream. In the surrounding Westerwald, VR5 follows the edge of the Krombachtalsperre nature reserve. The route begins at the Strohheck in Rennerod and follows the former railway embankment of the Rennerod–Herborn line towards Rehe. VR5 also passes through forests and meadows before reaching the Wacholderheide nature reserve and the Wendelinus Chapel near Westernohe.

Culture and History

In the surrounding Westerwald, the Dapprich estate was formerly the village of Daprethtingen, which was first mentioned in 1213/15. The nearby Dapprich estate has a farm café. Visitors can use a 3D archery course there.
